Oh no!!!Well it's not always puppies and rainbows here on the farm. We had a disaster in one of our brooder pens. (20) 3wk old chicks dead. Trampled and crushed. Not sure why they huddled so tight to do this. Irrelevant now. Never ever had a mass crushing and been doing this a long time. You always get one or two weak ones maybe but to have 20 still blows my mind. These were replacements to go back into breeding pens. We dug 2 more out of the pile that were alive so we'll see if they make it.
That is correct. Personally, I would use twice as much ice so I could nestle the thermometer between the cubes and swirl the water around it every once in awhile. If it settled on 32.9F after 5-10 minutes of that, I'd say it was off +.9F and I'd run my temp so it showed +.9 more than my incubator's target temp. Ex: Target temp=100F, thermometer should read 100.9F... target 99.5F, thermometer should read 100.4F... etc.
