your 62?

Sweet I have mine down alot, just need to rid the rest of the chicks that just hatched.  I had a broody was going to give mikes icelandics too, but she isnt around anymore.

Yes
It's been my goal to move completely into Altsteirers only. Slowly getting there. Although listening to the pullet size egg theory I may wait to hatch anymore of them. Their eggs are not as large as I thought they would be by now. I think they only lay a 52 gram size egg anyways but just by looks they are smaller than that. I'll have to get scale out and verify the size

awwww, precious babies!

What kind of hen is that? And the chicks?

I have a chocolate orpington that hatched some OEGBs for me. I had to look twice at your pic! Lol

did you steal his bird? lol

hi,somebody's b_day is Monday
Happy Birthday Seth! Sorry I'm late!

So many bdays in July. Lol.

First Hmong is out. Another is pipping.
First hona is still zipping.
Still watching. Lol I really gotta stop setting eggs to hatch on Saturdays. Sundays come to quick.
Congrats!

The one I was worried about last night didn't finish zipping. I assisted this morning. Yolk fully absorbed, no blood, but there was green poo in the shell. The membrane around the zip is stuck fast to the chick, and it seems weak. What do I do now??
take pictures

Morning all!

My 11 week olds have officially integrated with the big girls! Today is the first day they came out of the coop on their own and not by my promoting.

And in more exciting news, the 5 week olds went outside yesterday and spent their first night in their temp run until they are big enough to integrate!

Sooooo.... No more stinky house! LOL

Also, my daughter saved enough money finally to get her guinea pigs so we bought them this weekend. So cute!
have you ever seen a shaved guinea pig?
shaved-guinea-pig-baby-hippo.jpg

Got a chick that's been half zipped since late last night. Options to assist? Won't be able to help again until after work this afternoon.
2nd Hmong is out.
i hope you assisted

I finally watched "Minions"! It was such an awesome movie! I now know so much about them, it is amazing!LOL! It turns out that we were all wrong about so many things about the minions. You will just have to watch the movie to find out what.
i think i might see that someday, but i have no idea what its about

We are going downstate Friday to pick up my granddaughter....for the week..

Sooooooooooo.....I'm gonna have a three year old to follow around all week.
Have fun!! are the eggs going to hatch for her? how are they doing??

5 hatched, 1 zipping, 1 pipped!

Deal!! I have a couple of fine EE chicks I need to find a home for.....
pop.gif
ummm waitng for ee chicks to arrive at my door

Oh and in case anyone want to know, my neighbors broody quit, so she asked me to stick her eggs in my little brinsea, which I did. Well, last night they.....

...EXPLODED!!!!! It was the most disgusting thing I have dealt with in a looooong time!
sickbyc.gif
My whole house was putrid.
ewww so sorry!!
You guys are making me anxious for my eggs to hatch. Then it suddenly hit me.
ep.gif
I have eggs that are going to hatch! And a lot of them!

lau.gif

Guess what......
It has begun - Day 20

Just the one so far. Had to be away from home 6 hrs. Took pics upon return, removed broody poo {too close to eggs} and set water dish for Mama to drink {a LOT} then hooked back up out of reach of chick. Mom & chick calm now. Hope sisters arrive overnight!! Then water on the rocks for all!
awww, how many eggs total?
oh, and I started the incubator again..... my silkies are finally laying regularly again, time to see if my newest roo is doing his job!
wink.png
woohooo!!! everyone should set more eggs! lol

Lol I have a nephew who brews his own! I want to make honey mead myself. Uncle still has hives.
i want to try mead, my husband fixed a tire for a guy and they gave him a 1/2 gallon of raw honey for it!

I finally got him out he was stuck he had a little spot on his back tha the hair was stuck to the shell I just checked on him before leaving for work and the little guy is running around the incubator loving life and chirping
Congrats!!!

12, bator rechecked again.cleaned, upstairs and rocking. Leaving quail in the rails to hatch and using a carton when the big eggs are close. If no luck this time I am going to use the thing for a flipping target.
fl.gif

I am on vacation visiting my husband's family and I'm hatching eggs for his aunt here. :) They are Sussex, not sure what color, due August 7th.
@BantyChooks did you get this??

I have to practice pool every day this week. The last 2 days, I was too sore and tired to do anything but essential chores. Our first single elimination match is Saturday at 3 PM. Our 2 all stars got knocked out in the 4th round this past Saturday in the singles competition. There are teams/shooters coming from several counties and about 100 mile radius.
Good luck this weekend!!

Why would I do that? I'm gonna have a sweet bonfire complete with roast chicken, duck and goat when I leave.
gig.gif

It won't be easy and I'm a little nervous. This is my first time in a league. All of us will have to be on our game.
Most of the people that will be there don't miss. We could easily get knocked out first round. If not, there could be some significant money. Not sure how much but in the low thousands. We already have about $90 each coming back for winning our league. That gives me all the money back that I've spent.
at least you got your money back,
fl.gif

First 3 out. Including the assisted(was just a bit stuck to the shell with a little loss of fluff)
No more pips yet.
Sweet!!

How do I calibrate this type of thermometer? Or can I not ?

@Sally Sunshine
HOW TO CALIBRATE post #9068

its not calibrating but seeing how far it is off so you can accomodate

You can't.
you can see how off it is

Well fingers crossed I have lockdown on my very first ever eggs... I don't have many eggs so I will be happy with 1 chick to survive...
GOOD LUCK!!!!!
fl.gif

I cant wait to see this on fully feathered!

Sometimes I feel like I've been married longer than I've been alive!
ep.gif
Thats a LONG time!! lol jk

Right ok...well I've already put vitamins in the water, and I'm trying to keep them as cool as possible as well just in case it has been the heat...there was three of them doing it but now there only seems to be one that is particularly bad. When you say electrolytes, is there a particular brand or something? I will be cleaning them out too as they quite rapidly turn the place into a poo palace!
just so you know you can make your own
Homemade Electrolyte Recipe for weak/ill chicks post #3876

No way I am reading back over three thousand posts
thats not that many!!

spoiled, gooserz and ducks, nope cant eat them nope nope nope lol
awwww
love.gif
!!! did you get gooserz a friend yet??

So I think that Biscuits and Gravy will be a main course fairly soon. Probably about as soon as I get confirmation of there boyness.
at least biscuits and gravy taste awesome together!!

Question... do any of you have "ovation goals"? What I mean is do you set targets for reaching a certain number or anything like that, and does the ovation system motivate you to post posts that are worthy of ovations? Just curious...

-Kathy
no, i dont really understand the ovates system, i see how many i have and have given but dont know if they actually mean anything

I really like the ovation system, I guess because it helps me understand what types of posts people like. For example, people liked my emergency post quite a bit it seems, but other, like my poo pages, not so much, lol.

-Kathy
LOL, your poo ones are very informative even if they dont get ovates

is that from new people?
when i look at my ovates, my unique ovates have a comment with them, or at least the count goes up if someone writes something, i havent actually counted them lol

Hey, all!!!! I've been super busy at work (very busy time of year) and traveling, but all is generally well. I am over 9200 posts behind so, no, read back WON'T be happening.
ep.gif

- Ant Farm
Long time no see!! Hi!!!

Incubator is unplugged, cleaned, and everything is put away for the last time until next year. I think I'm having withdrawl.
hit.gif
this is no good, set more eggs

I kin do it, I got the feed bill & the electricity bill to motivate me.....
our electric rate just went down

These lil EEs are winning me over. *Sigh*

Maybe I'll just keep them until they feather out and I can see what they look like.....

Night all. Sally, was nice seein ya....
but i thought i was getting some new babies!!!
hit.gif

I think a pea egg under one of the ducks has pipped.

I think that the unique ovation is an ovation that some one wrote somthing attached to it!
( most of my time I had more ovation than posts! Until I got to this thread and started Babbling constantly!
lau.gif
)
Agreed! lol, blabber away!! you are Very informative

It was nice, if you don't count the fishing; that sucked! 10 adults+an infant+2 dogs, one of which isn't housebroken, is entirely too much for a 22' pontoon boat.
Oh! I forgot my newest fishing rod got broken with a truck window. Other than those minor details, everything was fine. Sure was glad to get home!
sorry that stinks!!
hugs.gif

I don't think people can handle that. I took off 21"
ep.gif
gadzooks!!

I am bald. Completely bald.
Hey! I've done that!!, it was fun and EASY!! kinda cold in the winter but very easy maintenance!

And you are not going to be telling me who has call duck birbs.....
tongue2.gif
but why not, Ravyn has them too and you know she shares very well

LIZ! Liz has call ducks of all colors!
celebrate.gif
I have the birds but not all the colors unfortunately but i'm trying :)

No, she has some funny-patterned snowys.
do you have something against my birds
somad.gif

Okay peoples..... Consider this an official notification. Any eggs that arrive here will be scrambled and eaten!!!
hide.gif
lies, big ones!
Yea that's what I was afraid of. I think I was trying to do to much with not enough samples per sample group. I think next time I will just be doing an AA test on half of the eggs and then maybe after that group do one where only cooling is involved. I'm hoping to hatch a smaller group at the end of summer so they start laying in the spring.

Mine is actually trying to get me to hatch some in the spring to sell so that the birds aren't being such freeloaders.
holy cow she wants you to set eggs!

Thanks lovelies... I wish I had someone on here that lived closer to me... I feel like I've done everything wrong. Like I've said before I'm raising 4 kids but chicks are diff.
chicks are more nerve wrecking than children! lol!!!

That should be fun. This household, or should I say, our whole city, are huge baseball fans.

There are worse places to drive than Seattle. D.C., Atlanta, Chicago, L.A..
It's all about perception. My brother used to have to fight traffic on his way to work every morning (even though ours doesn't hold a candle to the aforementioned cities).
He moved to far SW MO. After a few years I visited him. He took me to work to show me around then we went back to his house on small windy country roads. There was a car in front of us. He said, "I hate rush hour." And he was serious.

Hello!
you should try boston! not laid out like any other city!! complete utter chaos all the time! and GOOD LUCK if you miss your turn

I have roughly 5 acres that they have free range access to, and the pond/lake is about 3 acres in size. They are the only two birds remaining on the pond. There is a heron that visits every now and then and also a crane, but I haven't seen him in a while.
sounds like you need more webbed friends!

That would be nice. These are my moms birds, I inherited them when she passed away from breast cancer
hit.gif
. They ONLY liked her.

I keep looking! I'm already addicted to my chickens and REALLY REALLY want to add some goats!
sorry about your mom
hugs.gif
you should get more to honor her

Took photos of my twins today. Day 8. They are still moving/growing.

Wait, these are day 7.
crazy, i wonder how they will fare
fl.gif

I was living in Samoa back in the early 90's. I had gotten a local drivers license. One day I got a ticket for running a stop sign. But, it was a stop post - there was no sign (hurricane took it). They told me - when I got my license, I should have looked at the map, showing all stop signs, and memorized it. Some time after I moved away, they got their first traffic light in the middle of the city. First night - it was torn down. Second night - it was torn down. I am not sure how many times it was torn down, but it took a long time for people to actually pay attention to it. Drivers just didn't stop. Sometimes technology is not welcome.....
In Costa Rica, they don't use addresses. There are highway numbers and rarely street names but no one uses them.
If someone want's you to find them they'll tell you something like 50 mt. north of the Santa Elena Cathedral, then 200 mt. west.
In the capitol, most directions revolve around distances from the Coca Cola. That was a Coke factory that was torn down over 20 years ago but that is still what people use as a starting point.

yeppers, you know I think we have added a link about that decrease in size in that single post where we compiled info on pullet eggs, just dont have time or willpower to jump into that pullet egg subject and actually prove all that stuff and put it together, there are pros and definitely cons to them. What made me research a bit more this morning is I had an issue with this last batch of eggs. Due to circumstances I didnt get the eggs turned for many days, I think I started turning after day 11 or so, Almost all the large Eggs DIS and the very small serama eggs, HOWEVER, all the mid size pullet eggs I had in there hatched perfectly, was really really odd. All of Mikes icelandics hatched in a mal position, one stuck didnt make it to finish zipping. I just found it strange that the older hens eggs DIS early like day 14 ort 16 by the looks of the embryos. Sorry so fast, trying to feed the kids and type and think.... dont work well as usual
It is true that pound for pound albumen in pullet eggs contains better nutrition, however, there is still limited space available.

Thanks @Sally Sunshine . She was only 58. I struggle with her loss every day. She was amazing.

Thanks chaos and mike too!
hugs.gif

My mom died at the same age. It was very sudden. She didn't even know she was sick. 4 days later she was gone.

Yes

I only raise Black Penedesencas. They're supposed to lay a 65 gram egg. They usually achieve that by about 10 or 11 months of age. A few years ago, I had 6 flocks wiped out by mink and to get numbers up I started hatching every dark egg I could get. I mostly had pullets left that were laying. I had previously only hatched eggs that were 60 grams or above but if there were extremely dark eggs, I'd hatch some down to 55g. Now I had to hatch eggs down to 50 grams. When the resultant pullets laid, at 18 months of age, I was getting no eggs as large as 60 grams and most stayed in the 50 gram range.
I won't make that mistake again. I have yet to get my flock back up to the 65-70 g range they had been initially.

@DwayneNLiz That shaved guinea pig is hilarious!!! Thanks for sharing, I'm going to show my daughter, she will get a kick out of that.

And thanks, you are probably right...my mom always wanted chickens, which is partly why I have them now :)

......
That's funny that they still use the coke factory for directions. It's the same in part of our township as well though. People will give directions based on a drive-in theatre that was destroyed by a tornado in 1985.

Prebiotics and probiotics Anyone else feed their chickens and chicks this? I know a few do ferment, but those who dont?

I know I have posted over and over how I love this specific product, Poultry ProVita Nutritional Supplement (a supplemental source of vitamins and direct-fed microbials (probiotics) along with Inulin (prebiotics) for backyard poultry) and fermenting feed and the use of ACV. Does anyone know if adding ACV in the same water would hurt these microbs?

I use the pro bios for EVERY adult critter that I have because its easier for me in powder to add to feed than the above in waters.

There are many abstracts proving how beneficial they are and how they also can effect the growth rate later on in life.

I found this slide to help explain to those who dont understand pre pro biotics, if you care to have a look

http://www.slideshare.net/drswaroopsoumya/prebiotics-and-probiotics-40275016
I use purina flock raiser which claims to contain prebiotics (inulin), probiotics, (Enterococcus faecium, Pediococcus acidilacticil, Bifidobacterium aniamalis, Lactobacillus reuteri.) and yeast culture(unspecified). I ferment by adding water, stir, wait.

edited b/c forgot the inulin
