Quote: Or Baltimore, or D.C. That's pretty much it, I guess. I've been here 43 years; long enough to know & remember what it used to be. In those days a woman was in no more danger being alone outside at night than she was in her own home in broad daylight. Door locks were pretty much unused, and cars were, for the most part, left unlocked 24/7 with the keys in the ignition. For the most part, it's still that way where I am. Some call that progress, I guess. If that's progress, I want no part of it.

IMHO, I blame overpopulation.
Too many people fighting for too little resources.
I'm very close to Ferguson, MO. I could walk there - and through worse neighborhoods on the way. I don't lock my house or my car.

Maybe people are afraid to walk up this long creepy driveway.

I could offer the same thing. All you can eat and drink and all the work you need.

Actually, there are websites that link people willing to work with property owners. My favorite is Workaway

.

Why? Do you live above the Arctic circle?
These will hatch by the middle of September. That gives them plenty of time to be able to handle winter. I've had hens hatch chicks in November. October is my favorite time to raise chicks. They feather out better, they start laying eggs by April, cockerels don't suffer near the frostbitten combs that adult roosters do.

BYC people use any excuse for a HAL. I'm positive there will be one for Halloween.

What happens there?

Food storage. Another splendid idea.

Much of what I know about breeding comes from cocker forums and is mostly about line breeding to improve a breed. Sabong is a good one. I've learned a lot about breeding and caring for injured birds there.
You will only have a few but HRIR isn't a small gene pool so more genetic diversity is available to you. There are about 50 good breeders of RIRs in MO, some are rose comb but most are single comb.

As for Black Penedesencas, there are only 2 of us in MO. Probably way less than 10 across the country and most don't specialize, meaning they have few birds of that breed/variety. Isaac Rude (in MO) doesn't have very many and some of his are from me. He's a nice guy but IMHO, he has too many species, breeds and varieties. He has turkeys, ducks, geese, guineas and about 10 or so breeds of chickens.
When you go through the yearbook, look for people that focus on a handful of breeds.

Here's some links for you.

@chaos I thought I'd share these links to follow up on how environment changes gene expression

Don't you worry. You're doing great. I speak a few languages but couldn't do a thing with your alphabet. I gave up on Russian because I couldn't handle the Cyrillic alphabet.

I think a lot of people keep them as DP flocks. Not a bad choice. What is your climate like. They handle heat OK but I'd prefer them in a cooler/cold climate.

It gets fairly hot here, a couple weeks a year it gets over 105, but its fairly dry heat. i think i am going to try them
