Questions for the hatching experts...

  1. How often do chicks start peeping before they pip internally?
  2. What cause the sack they're in to be really thick?

-Kathy

I have mostly quiet hatches, so I can't say there is an actual frequency.
I believe the thickness has to do with humidity being too low or going up and down.

Wash hands with warm water and soap. Don't touch poop and then touch your face or mouth. Don't eat at the farm. Don't share food/drinks with your birds. Don't lick their feet.

But I'm guilty of a few of those...

That is because they are carriage horses. Look at them, but don't ride them. At least, if you want to keep your teeth.
I have seen one in a 3d event, and also dressage

Wow whites you have done an awesome job.... Wellll drum roll plz. MY COOP! (Sorta still in making lol)

Thanks to my hubs granny. Me and her did it all
awesome! congrats!

I've got a cabin way back in the woods..... I should sleep there sometime... Needs a bit of fixing up though.
i see another chicken house in the works.....

I had a great uncle who slept on the porch. He had a bed out there and everything. I guess "sleeping porches" were a thing?

This is why camps are still important! We have a "survivor" camp that has kids in yurts in the woods. They cook two meals a day over a fire all by themselves: chopping veggies, mixing and stirring, etc. They eat lunch inside the dining hall because it's just too hot. But rain or shine they're out there! I love it.

I'm hoping next year we can call it "trailblazers" and have like a pioneer theme. I want them to bring eggs from the coop and veggies from the garden to "barter" for flour and cheese, whatever they need for their meal. Of course they'll still get their food regardless, so maybe they can barter for fancy desserts.

Hi everyone. I have a question about one of my incubators. It's a hovabator still air. I got it brand new and brought it home and turned it on for a dry run. I cannot get the temp to stay the same. It's either too hot or to cold it does not matter how little or how much I adjust the thermostat knob. It sucks. Does anyone have experience with this? I'm going to put a fan in to circulate the air to see if that helps. Do you think I have a defective incubator?
not defective, you need heatsinks, marbles, bottle of water (capped), etc,
are you calibrated?

When I first lets my chickies out all they want to do is flutter and attack each other's... Is this normal?
yes
Ok, I know I talked big the other day and I still stand by all that... Today I just have some questions.

Some of y'all process any bird (regardless of breed or sex) at any time (regardless of age or size)? This is the one my boy named Cow Meat. I weighed him today, he's 3.5 lbs. He felt thin when I picked him up, but he's got some HRIR in him and I don't want to wait another six months for him to fill out. So he's not going to be a pretty table bird, but he'd make good gumbo, right?

looks yummy

is this in the notes @Sally Sunshine
what about rules for EXporting birds/eggs not importing

It's been pretty good, except for my sick kitty. He's urinating nearly pure blood. Ugh.

Just put some banana bread in the oven for my daughter so she's happy and the house smells great!
poor boy

I saw one on here recently built into a plastic drum to keep the feathers from going everywhere. Liz could probably locate the post pretty quick for you.
lol, yes but benny reposted, banty can find things too

I guess I'll candle my broody's eggs tonight. I hate going out there after dark. I had a dream that they were all clears.

Halloween HAL is coming up.....

I CANT WAIT!!! I love Halloween!!!

Well, today was good. I painted a coop, installed two automatic coop doors and openers ( which closed at dark like clock work with everyone inside

) Now only the grow out coop is hand operated, and I got my goat plaything half built. Everything but the screws is scrounged materials

I need to go back to work to rest

Awesome!!

When my neighbors were hoarding, they had to go down to 8 cats, and get them fixed. Call animal control.
Are they not hoarding anymore?? i thought they were>?

Going to be watching for the hen that was spending a little more time on the nest yesterday. Her breed isn't supposed to set but she look all the world like she was going to.

I'm having a little trouble with the temperature in my incubator. my thermometers says 99-100 in the bator. But when I felt the dish of water that was in it, it felt cool to me. I temped it, and it said 94degrees. I should go with the water temp right? That's closer to what would be inside the eggs. I would love some feedback. Thanks!
water will always FEEL colder to the touch
and by checking the temp you are making your own wet bulb hygro

The hen is still on the nest. May give her eggs tonight.

You lick their feet, don't you?
I won't let Duckling eat and drink near the coops. Even crossing the sidewalk near the lilac bush (where they hang out) is too close. She may eat and drink in the side yard, front yard, and on the swing.

My daughter shared a popcicle with her chickens... I'm 99% sure she didn't eat any of it AFTER she went out there to give them some... but... I can't promise that she didn't. haha

I ask because I just brought in four that were overdue and all four were making noise, but I could not see their beaks in three of the eggs, so I made a hole to take a look and they had not pipped thru the membrane, yet they were peeping. Sadly, one was malpositioned badly with it's head firmly between it's legs and I was unable to save it.

Duckling puts her cup and food on the ground. With poop. I don't want that in her mouth. Even sitting it in the dusty coop. If I forget it down there, and she puts it in her mouth the next trip down, she is likely to have dust, poop... Between the mice and the birds, it isn't clean enough.
She does share her food while she is at the table.

I am sorry about the malpo. Sometimes they make it, sometimes they don't. Obviously. Sorry for stating the obvious.
