The swelling is pretty normal with lacerations. I would clean the wounds, and at the minimum put something like neosporin without pain relief on the cuts. No on the rabies. Might want to isolate him from the flock.
I will get to work on that. he is separate now. My husband has saline solution for his cuts and I will hunt down some ointment for them as well.

Like I said, who knows? Only thing I know is that I'm no buzzystingeyologist guy.

Lovely chicken friends. I have a Bielefelder Cockerel, who in his bid to save our flock from a raccoon, suffered many face lacerations. None were immediately life threatening but in the last 2 hours his face has swollen immensely.

1) I assume this is normal and not a sign of hidden respiratory issues?

2) Is there anything I can give him to help reduce the swelling

3) Should he get anitbiotics? None of the wounds seem deep.

4) Do chickens get rabies?

5) what would you do?
Flush all wounds with saline solution.
Then use betadine (organic iodine) DO NOT USE hydrogen peroxide.
Then an eye type triple antibiotic ointment.
Do this twice a day.
Some campho phenique before the ointment wouldn't hurt.

He's now separated, wounds have been flushed, I used silver ointment, I will use a different ointment this evening.
