I think for the first week you should really try to get 25% protein or higher crumbles for the poults.
-Kathy
I'm going to try to get between 24-30%. I'm going to run to the grocery store today and make a quick stop at the two local feed stores.... if they don't have it, i'll try up in SA on tuesday.
An ice cream?
What I consider is a plus to neurotic skittishness is that they are less vulnerable to predators. I can let mine free range all day without being here and at the end of the day I expect them all to be alive and well - even though predators abound. Our easter egger chickens love my daughter, and our adult flock loves her too.
Our new batch of babies, with our polish crested are absolutely neurotic. She can pick up all the cochins and sex linked babies, but our polish scatter and act really flighty. She spends a lot of time with them, so I hope they outgrow some of that flighty-ness, or I probably won't get anymore of that breed in the future. I'm not a fan of flighty birds.
Her silkie is a little skittish after seeing it's mate die in front of her, but she's warming up to my daughter, and the incubator hatched baby imprinted on me at birth, I was the first thing it saw and it likes me and my daughter and has no fear of anything. I'm making sure it stays safe to encourage that behavior. LOL It's a cochin from our two adult cochins, and even our rooster is super sweet.
Turkeys and other gamebirds in nature are hatched in spring when bugs become available and they gorge on them. That's why the protein requirements of young birds is so high. As they grow, seeds are more necessary to meet energy needs.mealworms, I do have some on hand, but i've found the chicks won't eat mealworms at first. or at least my chickens won't until 3-4 weeks old. They are often scared of them. LOL
Maybe turkeys will be different?
I think i'm just going to try to get a poult bag of feed, and use that until I can lower their protien requirements which I think is around the 8-10 week mark? Then they can go on a regular all flock feed?
I'm still figuring out so I can make sure I order stuff in advance with my local tSC to make sure they get the stuff I need. It's a pain in the ***. They are always out of my shredded beet's that I feed to my hardkeeper horse, too.
She's anti pellets.
Hey all
I assume they aren't real cold hardy?Good news, bad news...
Good news - Two peachicks are pipped
Bad news - They are the last two of the season for me.![]()
Good news - They are the last two of the season. Why is this good? Because it's getting too cold and I don't want peachicks indoors this winter!
Bad news - 36 clear pea eggs. Not a surprise, the males dropped their trains a month ago and haven't been mating.
Good news - No peachicks in house this winter.

Maybe some canned mackerel. A high quality animal protein that's cheaper than any other.I'm going to try to get between 24-30%. I'm going to run to the grocery store today and make a quick stop at the two local feed stores.... if they don't have it, i'll try up in SA on tuesday.

But I imagine pea chicks aren't as hardy as chicken chicks or ducklings.
There are peafowl around here but I don't recall seeing them about all winter.
how many more do u need to get rid of?Sold my goose that was like my baby and a Muscovy duck
He's hoping to hatch out 10, and I said I'd buy whatever hatched. I'll know more on monday how many make it out of the incubator and go from there. What I consider is a plus to neurotic skittishness is that they are less vulnerable to predators. Many people that hatch don't know that male birds need to be photo stimulated to be fertile just like females do to lay eggs.
