I just made fresh egg bread in the bread machine and slaughtered it in homemade gooseberry elderflower jam. I am in heaven~

How does one go about slaughtering bead? Inquiring minds want to know.

I have some D'uccle Cockerals for sale! i need to sell them ASAP! They are Mille fleurs and hatched on Halloween. I am not sure of their quality, but are healthy and ready to find homes. PM as soon as you can if you are interested. They are perfectly heatlhy. Have not been exposed to my other birds.

controller is working good, shut down the incubator for now no need to run it yet, next step I guess will be working on the humidity and ventilation. lots of reading to do, I will be putting questions up hope you all can put up with it :)

Dang DOW is down 450

WWIII soon?>
New here! Looks like. A fun place to read, learn celebrate victories and lament the failures.
Not just new here but never hatched an egg before 3 weeks ago. So sadly I emptied an incubator this morning some snowflakes and butler bobs that I think I over cooked after a night where I saw 106 degrees on some kind of spike, have 2 styrofoam incubators still air side to side in wife's craft room, both jumped up so I don't know if a spike in elec can do that or what but beside the possibility of a few other minor errors turning 180, not letting delivered eggs sit 24. But I'll except it as learning and press on. Hope it's ok to ask about quail in here.
I just hatched a batch.
I didn't do anything specifically different than incubating chicken eggs, This was my 2nd hatch.

Pop on over to the quail forum!

sorry, my "shed" is so small that I keep my hay in that we can only stack it to bales high
Thanks.
hugs.gif

I saved a clutch of 12 last month. I don't know why she would lay her eggs on top of hay rolls 3 rolls high, cept maybe for protection? The babies had a LONG drop.

Merely mention her name and she magically appears. But I guess that's what angels do; 'specially the cattywampus variety

Getting two new thermometers
There ya go!

These are my two favorites that don't cost an arm and a leg. Both are extremely accurate.

I haven't used a hygrometer in a long time. I weigh the eggs periodically as an alternative.
Thanks Canoe! I never thought of using my digital HVAC thermo!

What did you get the swivel stuck in?

If you're gonna be around for a while, I'm gonna slip out to the blind, where my equipment is, and clean the muzzleloader.
Did ya do it?

Found a nest of eggs laid by a barred chocolate Muscovy, so thinking about firing up the Janoel.

MUH FEELERS!?!?
An old friend dropped by today. Said he'd spotted something at TSC awhile back, thought of me, but didn't get it. He obviously change his mind over the weekend, because today he walked in with a plaque for my coop. That was very thoughtful of him... the coop needed a little sprucing up!!!
big_smile.png

I like it! You should paint the coop, or a design on it.

Why do people handle live wires like they're venomous snakes? Isn't it easier to flip a breaker first??? That said... I wired my coop yesterday while the power was still on. I took precautionary measures... which amounts to leather gloves while connecting wires inside the junction box. Smart... very smart!!!

When it comes to getting something to work right, my motto is: "When all else fails... read the instructions."

he.gif

Amen to the throwing the breaker

Sometimes, Sometimes you need power, Like in my job.
Turn in your man card

gig.gif

Yes, sometimes the connection speed slows down, rebooting the router seems to fix it.
You'd be surprised.
If you have time later, my dishwasher won't go into the wash cycle. It appears to be stuck on the sit and knit in front of the TV cycle.

I've only hatched corturnix, and I tried buttons once.

Looks good, nice friend.
Can't help ya. I done seen nuff rollin pins!

How bout @Sally Sunshine Chitty chat thread.

NO ms/mrs/misses here!

Instructions are generally printed in 6 different languages, anyway; none of which are you fluent in.

True! Like those Italian made whirlpools I love so much, with a HUGE 4"x4" very detailed wiring diagram/schematic
IN ITALIAN
Exactly. Nothing useful in them at all. I could write better instructions then the people that get paid to write. I've even seen diagrams that weren't right.

Same....
"This assembly schematic covers model XXX (not shown)"
ALL THE TIME!

Except that it is a Chat-athon with very little about incubating.

It is easier.
Very rarely does one need to handle wires live. Check with a known working voltmeter first.
I was an industrial electrician many years ago. The leather gloves go on first and then rubber gloves over them. The leather alone will still conduct. Wrap screwdrivers with electrical tape for the inadvertent contact with grounded box housing.

My motto is exactly the same. It's fun to use when someone can't figure out how something goes together.

When I started in the trade, I was determined to never feel the voltage - desiring to go home after work.
That didn't last long. I was hit with 480 shortly thereafter. If you work with it, you'll eventually feel it. But taking the best precautions go a long way.
I worked with everything from millivolts to 28,000 volts.

The arc flash is more deadly than getting hit with the voltage alone. That's the current that passes through the air when the insulation of the air is no longer sufficient to withstand the voltage.
5-10 arc explosions occur in electrical equipment every day in the US. That number only includes injuries so severe that the victim must be treated at special burn units. It isn't necessary to touch live wires to sustain a flash injury.
Electrical arcs produce the highest temperatures known to occur on earth and can reach 4 times the temperature of the surface of the sun and do so in a fraction of a second.
An arc flash can be caused by a tool, rodent or anything that compromises the space between energized equipment and ground.

English included.
Those that translate the instruction into English don't help.

The way I read this....

@kwhites634 , your'e killin me, and my chair!

OK, don't get your shorts all wadded up.
I never implied that your thread wasn't chock full of valuable information about incubation and brooding - mostly supplied by you.
However you have to admit that 10, 20 , 30 pages at a time pass without the mention of incubation.

Easy access if you just look at the first page. The rest is mostly chat.
Call me an angry old white guy.

You're an angry, OLD , White guy.....

my shorts are actually cut offs, n fit nicely so they dont get wadded up.
I had not a clue everyone would become such good friends, blame that on the backbone BYC.
I said I am tossing around the chat thread in my head, its been tossing for a bit.
Not sure why all that makes a nice white guy all angry though,
but I sure do know that its pace gets pretty frustrating at times

I'm doing an experiment... Just set some bantam eggs with the duck eggs and will try to see how soon I can candle signs of life in them.

NEWSFLASH!!

@casportpony is doing an experiment!
UNHEARD OF!

I am addicted and want to set eggs now
I know how you feel.
Don't waste a 21 day incubation cycle because of jumpiness though.
What if you get 36 hours in and it spikes? You probably wouldn't toss em and would be worried about it the rest of the hatch

Well...I had to spend a few hours fixing the peacock pen. I didn't see it earlier, but the lion had grabbed a peacock by the tail and ripped a big hole (like 2'x2') in the aviary netting. I found blood tail feathers stuck in the fence and the hole was above my head. Inside the pen, there is a separate chainlink dog kennel. Some of the birds roost on top of that. It's one of those that he grabbed. The pen is 5 foot chainlink covered with chicken wire and Aviary netting up another few feet and over the peaked roof. He had to either stand up really tall or jump to get that bird. The bird is okay. This must have been the thrashing that alerted me.

Nothing on the game camera. I'm beginning to think it's not taking night pictures like it should be....

OMG
I hope you get em.
If'n I were there you'd have a STUFFED mountain cat.
Try setting up the camera, about belt high, then walk in front of it,where it's sure to detect the motion, then pull the SD card & check it. I've had SD cards go bad,as well. Some cameras don't have a visible flash at night, so as not to spook the game.

I kinda like the mix of chit chat and serious. More entertaining. I can't imagine trying to keep up with another thread! I'd probably have to drop the chit chat and that would be kinda sad.

I was juggling 3 threads for a while...crazy. I found a home here

Home is where the heart is
I have to agree, Phil. I've never seen any question go unanswered... or at least responded to before a solution was offered. The thing I worry about with a new chat thread is most of us will hang out on the new thread, and questions will go unanswered until someone decides to pop back over. I could easily chat on the frog... but I like the feel of this thread sooooooo much better. I don't know if I'm liking the idea of a new thread once I started thinking what it's going to be like juggling two threads at once. Just something to think about...

Same
Feel your pain Phil. I was over a 1000 posts behind this time. Wow

Sorry.
Someone say something, before my eyelids slam shut

your welcome, go readback I added a pdf for you.
The how to troll one?

I learned a valuable lesson this afternoon. Awhile back I bought a 2-quart jug with lid from the dollar store, and installed 3 horizontal nipples on it for my older chicks. Keeps the water clean, and the brooder dry... perfect. It's worked great for the last week, and I filled it up last night. This evening when I went down to the basement, I noticed the older chicks were a little noisier than normal. They normally run to the front of the brooder, waiting to be hand-fed clover... but this seemed different. I finished installing the de-icer in the water bucket in the run outside, and came back to look at the chicks one more time. I noticed they were pecking at the water nipples, but I didn't see any water in the little troughs, and none were raising their heads to swallow. The container was still completely full. Hmmm. I opened the brooder and poked some of the nipples, and could see the valve going in the container, but no water was coming out. I popped the little cover over the spout up, and tried again. This time water started coming out. It only took a second before the chicks realized there was water, and I've seen videos of feeding piranhas that paled in comparison to the frenzy those chicks displayed. I felt horrible! Those poor babies haven't had water since last night, and it was 5 pm when I realized there was a problem. The lesson I learned is if you have a water container with nipples, MAKE SURE IT'S VENTED!!!

15 chicks drank about a pint of water in less than 30 minutes, and have settled down. It's a good thing I check on them several times daily, or I might have missed spotting the problem... which could have ended in disaster. That was too close for comfort!!!

Nope! I was too busy being at work, if that counts!

But I also ordered something like this:
