Never ever buying a waterer again. Built one from a bucket and some poultry nipples. Today was the first full day of use and I'm in love with it. The chickens caught on pretty quick. So much less mess!

I had this happen just over a week ago. That's my thread if you need some friends. :hugs

I just checked your thread out - our boys were attacked almost on the same day! I wish I had seen your thread when I was dealing with this - though things worked out well. I didn't do the water therapy until three days later when  he had perked up (thought it would over stress him ) - if I had to do it again, I'd do the water therapy much earlier. He loved it, and it has really helped healing. I actually took Dumbledore to a good chicken vet (I was freaked out - it was worth it to ease my mind). She gave me some oral antibiotics and pain meds for him, but didn't advise putting anything else on his wounds, just leaving them open with hydrotherapy.

Glad your boy did well!

That's awesome. Same to you.
We were lucky that he didn't have any deep punctures. The dog got another pullet after that but no real injuries. She was in shock, but our weather was warm so I left her out. Once I found her in the yard and noticed her crop was full like the roo's, so I took her to the water pan. She hopped into the middle of it and drank a bit. The other hens and I were like :/

Pretty sure it was my dog that killed my sussex roo. There were black feathers on the south end of the house, then sussex feathers on the south, three spots on the west, and two places on the north side, where I finally found his body. The dog pulled the tail off my australorp hen and the roo got the dog away from her and to the other side of the house, where they never range.

RIP Easy. :hit

I did that two years ago and it's still working out great for my birds. I cut a hole in the lid for air flow, for easy refilling, and for the cord to a submersible heater. Hasn't failed me yet!

I use piped water supply/nipples for all the layers/breeders and have for a long time. I use 5 gallon buckets in the brooder building so I can treat separate pens as needed. On very rare occasions do I use anything thing else. Chicks are started day 1 on nipples.

I absolutely hate those vacuum waters with the screw on lids.
