HELP. My chickens feel skinny. They get plenty of food and free range two days a week. Is it just because it's cold out? They are laying daily with huge nice eggs, seem energetic.

Why are they skinny and how do I help them gain muscle? They are on 20 percent layer pellets
Have you ever de-wormed them? If not, might be a good idea to gather up a bunch of fresh poop and have a vet do a fecal float to check for worms and coccidia.

see this article and check them completely before you panic

Measuring Poultry Condition......

http://www.backyardpoultrymag.com/5-2/how_to_get_more_eggs/

A hen in good laying condition cannot be fat, she need not be too thin either; what we want is good condition a bit closer to thin than to fat. On four legged animals the spine would feel like soft, rounded hills. But how can we tell condition on poultry? Since poultry lay fat on differently than four legged animals, we have to look elsewhere as the spine is not the indicator we need. On poultry we need only examine the pelvic bones as indicators of body condition.

Where is your cold spot at? If I had to guess, it's at the bottom opposite the fan end. Please advise.

@chicknlove can you get us some more pictures? You may need another fan and 60w bulbs but what is getting me is I'm not sure you have enough vents. Or maybe not in the right places. This is not letting air push into all areas of the cooler. Make sense?

Thanks, I will have to check that out in my hens. Of course too fat for any animal or bird is never a good thing, but neither is too thin. The charts below are for pet birds, but can be used to measure body condition in chickens, waterfowl and gamebirds. I find that 2.5-3 is ideal, but a score of one is very bad news! IMO, 4 is unhealthy and a 5, that bird needs to go on a diet!

As much as the feed stores charge, I wouldn't drop the price. Though the feed stores are more of an impulse buy, so will sell faster. How many times have we all gone into a feed store for a bag of feed, and cone out with an extra dozen chicks?
*raises hand* Me, once! Went in, came out with 4 banties. Next time I went in it was pre-meditated so it dont count. :lau
Does anyone else record the eggs their ladies lay? I have recorded all the eggs I have gotten since I first got chickens  I'm crazy.
I do... Sorta off and on.
HarmonyAnn with the Kira Pup, I sold her she gets picked up this week roads permitting.... :hit
:hugs She is adorable!
I just filled the other coolerbator up an hour ago.... ignore temps, one was under the light while I put them in, I think a few others just set eggs on the incu w/ friends thread too! My others hatch in a week I think.
:celebrate Awesome, if everything goes as planned we should have chicks at about the same time... :fl Thermo comes tomorrow! :yesss: Is it illegal to say "I can't wait for monday?" :th (Last time I say that, ever)
I need your suggestions on this. I am starting to set aside eggs for my next batch to go into the incubator (Its really addicting). Anyways, instead of having no idea on what cross breeds the chicks are, i want to put one of my roosters (A Black Copper Marans) and 2 hens in one of my smaller coops as a breeding pen and collect the hens eggs. What breeds of hens should i put in? Thanks! Hens (The ones that are laying at the time) RIR BCM Polish Speckled Sussex Buff Orpington Blue Americana Easter Egger
I'd go with what fire370 said, but the EE or BO cross would be cool.
I always get it all over myself. Benny says bleach and Sally says ammonia. I know better than to mix them. :lau But really...
 :lau
