Ugh! I knew someone would deny it!
I went into our local feed store this fall and came out with 5 Speckled Sussex. Still regretting it... So tiny! And they're escape artists. I had hoped for more size, and to cross with my large red/black-tailed Naked Neck boy (Tank) to start in on some mottled Naked Necks. The shipped eggs I'm getting will be part aloha Naked Necks with better size than this, so hopefully I'll get at least a few chicks from that to add to my flock genetics.

Thanks SO much! I will likely do this soon (curse you, @LocalYokel !) - good easy access to Texas A&Ms just up the road, and I have the bones of a flight pen I can make (when I finish my other chicken construction pans!!!)

just what I wanted to hear! (the oldest of these eggs is 2 days- will be 3 tomorrow at 8:00. That means they will be 5ish by set date!

anyone else mark date, time, and which hen laid it on the egg carton?
Yep. Partly just because I'm a compulsive record keeper, but partly because I only have three Cream Legbar girls, each with pros and cons regarding breeding decisions. We'll see what I get, but knowing parentage will help if I want to line breed with one of the girls particularly. I'm fortunate in that I track eggs anyhow, so I can recognize their eggs by shape, size and color. (It's subtle). Not home during the day enough to do trap nests.

Sally, I was particularly interested in something I read (in my giant binge hatch reading over the past few days) - that there was a relatively recent study indicating that INCREASED temperature at hatch was associated with better heat tolerance in chicks as adults later in life. Heat tolerance is really essential for me (which is why I have Naked Necks - and the Cream Legbars have done GREAT in the summer heat here!). I'll have to look that up to see what the circumstances were in that study, and I probably won't experiment with that this first time, but something to consider for the future....

Sweetie was looking SO cute today - as she's full NN genotype, she has fewer feathers, and she's grown some under-fuzz to keep her warm on near freezing nights. She looking like she's wearing a fur-lined coat now. (She lives up to her name, follows me around, in pic below trying to jump on my shoulder. She's my secret favorite...) Friendliest birds EVER.

Here's big man for the NN flock, Severus Snape (with a rose comb! Go figure!):

(The coop I'm working on is for them - it's SO overdue, will be done soon!!!)

Well if i knew how to ship some to u

@chicken hawk 33
Bator adjustment pics- SUPER EASY!
Surely you got legos and a hot glue gun around somewhere, CH! Took me all of 60 seconds!

About still air vs forced:
Still air has varying temps in the bator, the closer to the lid the hotter it is. Therefore, because there is no fan to blow the hot air around and even out the temps, you must keep it higher (102) to insure an internal temp of 99.5. Buy a water wiggler (Or DIY with a baggie) to make sure you are getting the right internal tempature!
Clear yet? If not, re-read it 5 more times and re read hatching 101.
