Anyone here will tell you; I'm OCD. All my firewood is cut @ 16" consistently, unless someone else cut it, in which case I cut it down to 16". That all contributes to more uniform rows.
Likewise, when snow blowing paths through deep snow, I stretch a rope from point A to point B, to ensure straight paths, and therefor the shortest distances.
