I am a rather inexperienced hatcher myself. I use an incubator warehouse incubator. The first 2 hatches went well. The second 2 hatches were horrible, with several late losses (day 18+ to post hatch). This incubator does have a horizontal tray for turning eggs. I had always candled at day 7, 14, & 18, but I had never marked air cells (oops) but I started getting wrong end pips. I think I may have not sanitized the incubator appropriately and I never realized there was a plug on top of the incubator I needed to remove to improve ventilation. I've not used any other incubators and I have learned so much by participating in these hatch alongs. I'm looking forward to Saturday evening for my day 7 candling. I'm working with BCM eggs and the person I got them from only has a 50% hatch rate - but hopefully I can see if interventions helped by reducing day 18+ losses.

How was the hatch rate with the eggs you won? I hope it was okay

With dark eggs like your BCM, I feel that you *must* keep the humidity low during the first 18 days. The extra pigment slows evaporation at lot. This is also true of blue eggs. I keep RH below 30% and raise it to 80+% for lockdown. I typically get 100% hatches on fertile BCM eggs. This year I'm getting close to that with Welsummers also, which is thrilling because last year I had lower percentages of fertile WS eggs than the other breeds. Blue eggs breeds hatch very well with the low RH also. My hatches on light brown eggs is worse, I'm contemplating incubating them separately at higher RH to see it that helps. They don't seem to have larger air cells, so this would be more of an experiment to see if there might be something else going on, though everything I know would indicate otherwise.
