Grief and Euthanasia - Human-Animal Bond

The AVMA Guidelines for the Euthanasia of Animals are intended for use by members of the veterinary profession who carry out or oversee the euthanasia of animals. The overriding commitment of these Guidelines is to provide veterinarians guidance in relieving pain and suffering of animals that are to be euthanized.

The recommendations in the Guidelines are intended to guide veterinarians, who must then use professional judgment in applying them to the various settings where animals are to be euthanized.

lists this method as conditionally acceptable for birds, with a trained person using a sharp guillotine, and recommending plastic cones to restrain the animal and minimize distress, and reduce risk of injury to the operator.) Requires training and skill, but very effective and quick. Violent muscle contractions can occur after decapitation, significant blood, sharp objects pose hazard to individual. It's my one remaining vice. Dr. Pepper is actually my drug of choice. I try to limit them but DH had a birthday and I did some traveling, and I like one to sip when I'm shopping. We don't keep soft drinks at the house.

A pinch makes your biscuits rise.

Tried Dr. Pepper once; tasted like carbonated prune juice. Tried it again after the formula was supposedly changed; tasted like carbonated prune juice  :sick

I've never had prune juice. Sounds like I'd love it! :weee

@campingshaws
I thought I was the onlyest one.

We don't keep none in the house either,
Always get a coke before I walk into the store

Nope! We're the same. :love

Okay so this is a question about the other end of a chickens life. As soon as I catch the ODB he's losing his head. I have two groups of chickens (currently) both have roosters and both groups are housed separately. When the one group loses there rooster would it be a good time to incorporate both groups? One group is 6 hens and a roo thats gonna be soup and the other is 3 hens and a roo. Losing the top of the pecking order should make them reshuffle things so I would think it would be a good time to add some to it. Thoughts?

Vacuum sealing's the best thing to come along since sliced bread. We use it every year when we process deer.
I like it too. I'm about to invest in some shrink wrap poultry bags and see how they work.

The Seal-A-Meal is one brand; there are a couple others. Not sure what brand ours is without dragging it out, but I believe I bought it from Cabelas. You can also marinate in them. Son calls them "Suckifiers"
I bought a used FoodSaver a few years ago on E-bay. It worked pretty good. After a lot of practice, I realized they don't like moisture.
Last year a friend gave me a 15 year old brand new Seal-a-Meal still unopened. Her father bought it for her and she never opened it. It was high end with a rechargeable battery so you could use it out in the woods. It was so old the battery wouldn't charge and they don't make them any more. It still works fine plugged in.

good morning scott!!!! @scottcaddy how you have a fantastic day!

Good Morning!!! how are you this morn?

thank you!!

and just a tad in deviled eggs, it makes a difference with that and a bit of distilled vinegar just sayin
Our secret is horseradish.

My suggestion is to explain the situation and ASK him to help you build something if you really want to! go to him with plans in hand and explain to him how it works and see if he is willing to create it with you. my guess is if you have hand drawn plans and pricing etc and walk up to him to show him he will think differently than if you just suggest it in conversation. He will know you mean business and are dedicated to the project.
Excellent advice.
There's that mom thing.

Of all the things I've lost over the years, I miss my mind the most.
Of all the things I've lost over the years, I miss my eyes the most.

You should have seen my dad when I plugged in an extension cord with the outlet end cut off. Yeah that blew a fuse both my dad's and the fuse at the panel

Conversation went sort of like this and it was one sided. "Hell kid don't they teach you anything in school ".

That's what he gets for leaving a cut off extension cord laying around - dangerous.

My one remaining vice is beer. Quit coffee cold turkey over a year ago.

I quit Coke years ago after I saw what it does to raw meat

Works great for getting rid of corrosion on automotive batteries, though.
I haven't had a 'soda' (that's what we call it here) in about 20 years.
I used to drink some disgusting things I wouldn't touch now. Ever have ChocCola?

Glad it's you and not me but feel sorry for ya, I avoid shopping like the plague lol, sister says I am abnormal cause all women are supposed to like to shop
I avoid Walmart like the plague. I've bought a fishing license there twice when I was out in the boonies having forgotten to buy one and that was my only option.

Hey all. This weeks hatch. 17 out of 18. Had to help one out. Normally dont do that but was almost zipped out. If it makes it it makes it.
Excellent results. Good job.

It is amazing how some cardboard will turn a crappy styrofoam Bator that cannot hold tempss into an amazing, temperature holding, bator in a box. Also I am waiting to hear when I can go pick up my wine cooler for the new incubator I'm building. What a wonderful start to the day.
It sure does work. Just don't block off bottom or top air holes.

Good post but I think that extreme human animal bond is a relatively new phenomenon, at least when it comes to livestock.

IMO, I'd just put them together when you're down to one rooster. There won't be as much hen squabbling with a rooster present.

Not sure exactly the question. All mine are separated unless there in the breeding pen. Roosters have there own section, hens, chicks and juvenile. When I get a new chicken they go right in the designed section. I have like 9 roosters in a section and 20 something hens in there section. I let them do there thing. Usually doesnt last long. They learn there place pretty quick.
