I got a question for y'all. I happen to really like my black and red Sex Link hens, and when I expand the flock in the future I want to start breeding and hatching Sex Links. Anyone happen to have done so before or known someone who has, and if so what breeds are best for breeding Sex Link hens with?
Check out the first page of this thread and there are a million links i think in the second post. Anyways there are about 8 of them that deal with genetics. I'm not sure if you read those but that's a great place to start

Thanks muchly Bubbles! I'm fond of Sex Link hens and EEs/Araucanas so when we expand I want a lot of them (as well as d'Uccle or d'Anvers, husband LOVES them because they're cute little Belgian birds).

I think you are my twin..... I love those breeds too! :highfive:

BSL are good layers, pretty and full of personality. EE don't have any 2 chickens the same, and their eggs are beautiful!
D'uccle are just plain CUTE, and the hens have lovely personalities as well. The roos can be a bit on the nasty side though.

I read them but I was still unsure. I figured I'm better off asking than doing something and screwing up XD
I think it would depend on the bird you want out of the cross and which genes you want to use to make your sex-links. Most people use the barring gene I believe. I used the id+ gene for mine, however the dermal melanin doesn't start to really show good for a few days. I used an easter egger rooster and Rhode Island Red hens. The results were that male offspring have yellow legs and the females have green legs. Unfortunately it does take a few days to be able to sex them, however with the easter egger genes, they can look like anything! (Rather than a black or red hen). Just my experiences

10 out since early am today, 15 great pips pulled one
serama are doing nothing yet, I set them a day late
