I suspect it's because she knew the roo was weak. Animals sense these things, and tend to speed up the natural process of elimination. Survival of the fittest kind of thing...

Possibly. Or I am thinking she wanted food and he was in the way of that

@Sally Sunshine

Just wanted to share with you this picture of my Silkies 2 fertile eggs. The egg on the left is fresh & the egg on the right was incubated under broody for a 24 hour period. Note the growth started on the egg on the right just in 24 hrs.

Y You killed the baby :(
CH, I didn't kill a baby. I removed an egg from under a broody that I didn't want hatching more Silkies at this time.

So about what on average is the difference production wise?
Egg production will be a little less with heritage. The biggest difference between heritage and production is feed-to-egg conversion. Productions are smaller, eat less, and lay sooner, and lay more frequently. Heritage birds mature a bit slower, and eat more due to their larger dual-purpose bodies. If I remember correctly, the productions will yield more eggs over a short term (couple of years or so), while heritage will yield eggs over a longer period of time.

Wasn't it the roo between your feet? Were you holding a sack of feed between your knees at the time???   :lau

Haha! Yes he was. But, I was standing in front one of the coop door to get all the other chickens out so I could put the hurt ones by themselves in there. I was thinking that she wanted to go into the coop where the food was and he was in the way

Hmm... I suppose it's a possibility. Bossy hens do tend to flaunt their authority to subordinates around the feeders, but it doesn't really make sense since you were also blocking access. We may never know what provoked it...
