Installed a timer for the light, and hung the heater. Brooder is finished, with the exception of bedding. Need to move it into it's final resting spot, and run an extension cord. All in all, I'm pleased with how it turned out... and I'm my own worst critic. I plan to use absorbent pads the first few days until the chicks are eating good, then switch to pine shavings. Has anyone tried puppy pads for newly hatched chicks? They're more absorbent than paper towels, so I can't see why they won't work as well... or better. Anywho, this is the final product with the slide-in divider inserted:

I read through before I posted for once YAY!! so your cutting an opening yet? thats cool. The others had great advice.
Definitely! Once you confirm that they are gone, still go in slowly. Through the air cell first, wet the membrane and feel for movement.
I opened one one time and thought it was gone, sliced the membrane only to find a live one. Good luck!
I like it! Looks great! I might do something similar.

I use puppy pads to start. Has worked well with most of my chicks. One set (can't remember which breed) picked at them quite a bit and I had to take the pads out, but it worked well for the others. So just keep an eye on them and make sure they don't pick at the "stuffing" in the pads. It didn't hurt mine, but it sure doesn't sound too appetizing, does it? Lol
although for some reason I think chicks just might dig that stuffing

First hatch is 1 week old and I'm already starting new eggs....lol I'm addicted
ha ha ha you go girl!!!! who is your favorite chick??

anyone on here that could answer me a question

I am on day 21 the first egg to pip has not made any progress since 7 am it's now 5 pm, chirp is starting to get weaker, just before lock down was gone for a few days and son didn't check humidity got down to 16%. at this point should I try helping her or not? last time I waited 24 hours and lost the chick

Noo, still wait the 24 hrs. You just had bad luck last time. It will probably wake you up in the middle of the night. If you are not hearing peeping, it's just resting. I didn't hear anything from my chicks during their pipped time..quiet this time!

And, I'm sure you already have, but get the humidity back up?

yeah it's sitting at 65-70 since lock down, my 3 week old chick is calling to her so hopefully that will help motivate her
Hi!!! @slordaz

glad you have found the thread! welcome! what I have noticed is they tend to chirp alot when they do an external pip and then do quiet down and rest for a while before they zip. I must agree with Cynthia, if you have only gotten the external pip at 7am I would give her the 24 before investigating. you have the assisted link? if not its in my signature below!

Yes ma'am, I'm going to cut out a window in the front half of the divider and cover it with construction wire just like the front halves of the top and sides of the brooder. That will give the chicks a view from three sides. They'll be able to see the other half of the brooder, and when they get big enough, they'll be able to explore the "new" side of the brooder. I intend to only use the pads for a few days, just till they start eating good. Hopefully, they won't be too interested in digging in those few days.
