Not sure what it was. It left a stool sample for me that I might research later. Went back out to reinvestigate and I think there is only 1 chick not accounted for. None of the hardware cloth is torn open or ripped loose. I suspect scared them into possibly cardiac arrest. Not sure how it managed to bloody them up though.
How big are the burrows where the fresh dirt was found?

Howdy from the lake guys....60 degrees here earlier. Brought the neighbor boys
Out....Mason in the blue is a fellow leukemia survivor.
Phil your so cool to take them!! I am not sure I would want to be on that ice though yeezus and 60 degrees??? is that a typo??

I just finished a Leukemia fundraiser I set up for our school. The school helped me earn over 4000 dollars, and it was all for my birthday wish. Helping others get through their difficulties is always worth it. It obviously wouldn't be good to have, and I'm sorry you and Mason went through it, but you pushed through and are standing tall today.
Awesome Mira!!!

I found some pretty nice pallets 40x48 inches, for 2 dollars each. I really need to build a coop for my extra Roos, does anyone keep their Roos together? And can they be able to see and hear the hens? Or will seeing the hens make them fight? I'm not really wanting to cull young chicks, rather raise them for meat, but my main flock is free range, and I want to keep the Roos in a run. Hens can go be hens and produce tasty eggs for me
I save roos, example Halloween HAL I processed them last week, all together they started to fight a bit, I could have tried for a few more weeks though. Legbar

Just candled the 48 eggs set 8 days ago.

1 unfertile
1 blood ring
1 stopped developing

45 eggs left but one has a hair thin crack but still developing and moving around inside ( don't know how I missed that one when setting them) 13 more days to go.
Thats not shabby!!! awesome!!! you did fill the crack correct? @DON956
CRACKED EXPENSIVE IMPORTANT EGGS
If you do receive a cracked egg and it’s an expensive egg you can try to hatch it, but beware of bacterial explosion and good possibility of ruining other eggs. It is possible to hatch a cracked egg by sealing the crack with candle wax/crayon wax or finger nail polish. Try to place the egg in a cup or protected place well away from other eggs. If viable to hatch, keep a close eye on where the pip mark will be in case the chick cant get through a fixed area.

May I ask what this thread is for? Jk! I am learning so much about well why they made this website. So those special people who love chickens can exspress their crazy.

Hi all----my chickies need help!
This is my first hatch and I am on day 23. One hatched day 21 and 3 more hatched out. My problem is that the chicks aren't fluffing out. They are dry but crusty and have bits of shell stuck to them! I know now by reading previous posts my humidity in incubator was set too high. (I followed incubator directions!) But what do I do for my little chicks now? I am tempted to wash them off! How can they stay warm in a brooder if they don't fluff out?

@ctkling 192

I do wash them with dawn soap under warm running water! just dont get beaks wet!! and then dry fluff with a light washcloth and brooder at least 95 in one corner!!

How are they doing?

what temp did you run and you calibrated thermo hygros? you are using more than one thermo hygro?

My farm is crazy too. I had a little meltdown yesterday. I've been doing everything out there, but DH thought I was loving it. I've been stressed because I can't stay on top of farm and house and everything else. Feeding baby animals is more important than keeping the house clean.

I agree with everyone else. Check fb or craigslist for eggs if you don't have any friends with birds. Try for $5 a dozen or less. A lot of yard eggs are fertile, just check and see!

:hugs
Feeding the babies is more important.

Maybe your chillins can do chores when they are of age!

7 and 4. They're of age. Still coop training the birds and the kids let them sneak out. No fence for the goats, so can't have them getting out. Housework... Well... We're getting there.

Morning Dax! :frow

My honas are 6 weeks tomorrow and mostly feathered. Little bed head fuzz on their heads and pin feathers in the body. I'm moving them out in three days. Their brooder is already outside, but I'm moving them to the coop.

Nice.

It's nice to move em to the coop, so they dont hafta relearn where "home" is.
Whats the temp gettin to in your parts?

60s during the day, high 30s at night. Or warmer. Or colder. It varies wildly, which is why I have a cold. :/

Lop it off and cauterize

Believe it or not, they can sometimes rip a whole teat off, when getting up if they stepped on it.

Here's a better late than never question. Did you put wire across the ground attached to brooder at least one foot out from edge of brooder. This will help to keep some varmits from digging into brooder. Maybe not all.
Definitely not all, but a definite help. I've got something burrowing into my coop where I couldn't put an apron; looks like a rat from the size of the burrow. Not too worried about it; coop is 2' off the ground and nowhere to get a foothold. Whatever is getting in is trailing feed back toward the point of entry, or was 'til I bought a PVC cap to slide down over the feed port of the "Y" connector.
