dippity-dooThanks for all the advice fellow chickie-lovers. You have helped set my mind at ease.
I have a hovabator with automatic turner, wafer heater and no fan so I believe I kept my temps too low at 99.5 (what the instructions with the bator said!) .I had my temps too low and my humidity too high. I've been reading BYC for quite a while and thought I had the info I needed to start raising peeps from my backyard flock. Of course I was wrong! After starting the incubation process I read more, and thought I should change this, or I should change that. ( I am a bit of a worry-wort) I ran the incubator dry for about a week but it's styrofoam and held so much moisture it just wouldn't lower. Soooooo,,,,,,,,,3 days of 35% moisture just wasn't enough to dry them out. Come day 18 and time to raise the humidity. Ugghhh, my poor chickies look like they have been swathed in dippity-doo. ( I know, I am showing my age.)
My husband thought I was crazy this morning when I started washing baby chicks but the baby who hatched 36 hours ago was still encased in his solidified goop.I've washed 2 chickies and they are dried completely and under an artificial broody-hen. (thank you for that post) They SEEM to be doing alright, active, but I haven't seen them eating or drinking yet, so of course, I am worried.
I have 2 more to bathe and 10 more eggs to hatch and it is day 23 so we'll see if I get any more.![]()
No more late hatches and sticky chicks for me! Next time I am going to try dry incubation. I'll also see if I can get my hubby to install an old computer fan in the hovobator or buy the kit to get rid of hot and cold spots. I'll let ya know if any of them make it.
Thanks again for the help everyone!I know thats not funny but its funny reading the words! sorry you have a mess!! We can help get ya through a good one!![]()
