You tagged the right person. I almost lost a hen to a worm of some kind, but she had the clumped up poop on the backside. I think that can be any number of things though. Kathy will probably want a pic...

I'm sure she will :(

I'm hoping, given the other factors I mentioned, she can formulate an opinion.

Poopy butts in my flock have been due to so many things, cancers, worms, repro issues, infections, or a combo, so it's impossible to guess without more info. Your hen sleeps in her bedding, so maybe she sat in a pile of poop? That would be they best case scenario. What concerns me is that you commented the her feathers looked off. Since most of us aren't going to take our birds to a vet, we have to learn how to be our own vets, so think about how a vet might go about treating a chicken. Pretty sure most would start by just watching it, then they would weigh the bird and do an exam. That exam would include checking mouth, eyes, ears, vent, palpating belly, etc. Poop... All bird vets will want to check the poop. Since most of us don't have what's need to check it microscopically, we have to find similar looking pictures online and guess.

There is a method to my madness, so I say place your wife's food scale on the bathroom counter, catch the hen, turn off bathroom lights and place bird on scale. Once weighed, do a thorough exam and make note of how fat or thin she feels. If possible, place in a crate on towel of newspaper for poop sample.

Can I syringe feed him with something? Can I do anything?
Heat is probably the best thing for now. Maybe put it back in the bator.

Sometimes chicks are just not destined to hatch/survive. The strong ones do, and the weak don't, which is actually good for chickendom over all

Are there any electronic wizzards on line right now?  I have a shipment of eggs coming on Thursday, and today is the first day that I've been off the couch for a while.  Energy level is in the toilet, getting over the flu... Starting bator build, only to find that the only wire included with my STC 1OOO was the sensor probe.  So, I am clueless what to do for the remaining 2 sets of wires.  I bought this unit last summer, and assumed that all installation wires were included.  Can any one help me figure out what to buy or use for hook up?

Hi I have a cheap bator so I just took a 6v cordless phone dc and cut it to expose the two wires. Next I connected one to the + (red) and one to the - (black) wires. If you are using a fan that has four wires, that means it has two speeds and you don't want to use a 12v DC because you're fan will run way too fast. So cap off the other two wires and don't use them. Mine are yellow, blue, red, black. I couldn't mount my fan so it's free standing and I have safety hardware cloth over it.

* edited to say that my fan actually plugs right into my wall outlet*

Yeah, but these are my chickies... And my Ayams too. So it really sucks to see this. She passed away a couple minutes ago. Everything was absorbed and gone. I think the dip in the air cell caused them to not move their heads.

It s REALLY good to hear you are OK. I was up when the news broke. Had to call my brothers (both airline pilots in Europe) and I thought about you being so close.
Thank you for thinking of us. Husband is not taking things well, it's his first time dealing with something like this on his home soil. I still remember 9/11, so I was the one checking in with family and friends to make sure they were all okay. This is the second time I had family/friends at the site of a terror attack, and thankfully everyone is still alive.
