I am sorry LittleLakePhil I was unclear. When it is given for pain it can relieve the pain. In no way was I saying that because people who take it, even for years as a relief for pain are addicted. Absolutely not! Tolerance or even physical dependence is not addiction.
The issue is when pain diminishes, and the patient continues to take opiates - then they can become addicted. There is no pain to relieve but the brain craves the drug. That is why I was careful to say that people can become addicted to it due to (an episode of) shingles (see quote above).
The problem of people being prescribed opiates for longer than is necessary for post op pain, or after an injury (- ie conditions that are not terminal and usually get better), and then become addicted is HUGE. Patients are now suing their doctors for over prescribing opiates when they become users. That said it is the duty of the prescribing doctor to be diligent and NOT over prescribe these drugs, but that does not always happen.
