Do you have a favorite method or tool for feather plucking?

I have a homemade plucker but Brit and I can be done in the time it takes to set it up/clean it up. Only time the plucker comes out is if we kill a bunch of heavies, like over 50-60. I don't even scald over heat. I scald with straight hot water in a 5 gallon bucket straight out of the water heater in the shop. Usually get 5-6 birds out of it before I get new.

Any hatching tips would help

@fire370 If you process cockrels, do you know if the first one is what Hoover Hatchery calls a red ranger, and if the second is the same type or the other dual/meat bird they call rainbows?

BTW does anyone know if the one in the background of the second picture is a brown Leghorn? March 1 chicks.
I have so many chicks types I have never had so it is hard. I was hoping to use numbers, but you all know I lost so many of who knows what that I can't.

I think Sally has a write up but I'm sure there's lots of stuff out there. I grew up doing it and kill pretty often. Raised my kids doing it as well. Not much too it. My youngest, Brit, has always been my wing man. She's very good help at any chore no matter what it is and never complains. She's 18 now and where has the time gone?

I didn't get the chance to learn when I was younger, learned how from a friend I used to hunt with.
My daughters both have helped but both of my boys have weak stomachs. :gig
The girls were in their early twenties the first time, and still help each fall. Of course they know most of the 'proceeds' will end up in their freezers, but they are becoming pretty good at it.

I use wax in the scalding pot, then a quick ice water dip. Helps glue the feathers together a bit better for plucking.
There's dozen of good u tube videos of the process.
I am thinking of building a plucker for this fall. I've used one built from an a old washing machine. They do a decent job, if you don't mind the occasional missing leg or wing on your processed birds.

Yes, thankfully.
But I think it will be rabbit food(salads) for breakfast , lunch and supper for the next few days!

I don't want to see another turkey, ham, or three bean salad for at least a couple of months!

How's the coop renos progressing?
Still progressing, if a bit slowly. Had to go back & fix a couple dumb-a** mistakes...par for the course. Tough to do something like this when you really don't have proper facilities for it & don't feel like freezing your butt off working outside .Not being able to lay your hands on a particular tool that you know you own, & having to run 15 mi round trip to replace it sucks, too.

First one looks like a Red Sex Link, no matter what it's called. I'm not familiar with the Red Rangers.

Second one, can't tell. Can you get him to stand up?
