Were there injuries or just dead?
Did you quarantine new birds as far from your birds as possible and for 40 days?

Oh, 18'-24", huh? Never gonna happen here, I hit solid rock before that. Oh well. Here's hoping for a fantastic hatch! :fl Ah, yes, your sig. Right there. With all of your chickens listed... I blame my stupidity on fatigue... This is part of why most of us who keep NNs don't bother with SOP and cross them with other chickens with wild abandon. Much of the benefit comes with the N gene. There have also been studies that the growth is better for meat purposes as well. Well, I happen to think they are adorable!!! Interestingly, I didn't think so until I had them in person - I thought they were ugly, but got them for utility purposes. Now I think they are almost regal looking as adults (and so cute as babies). They lay eggs in various shades of brown, quite prolifically. They are also very friendly and good natured (almost puppy dog like). I just processed a 7 month old cockerel yesterday. Despite the fact that my scalder wasn't up to temperature so it was a wet "dry pluck", it wasn't all that bad (though I was grumpy because I was getting rained on) - nothing like plucking a fully feathered bird. He was Nn (heterozygote). I have also processed those with homozygous NN genotype/phenotype (even fewer feathers), and those are even easier. Apparently if you end up with Naked Necks with pea combs, there is yet another drop in numbers of feathers - I may try that. I understand that they do fine in cold climates - but I am particularly happy to have them here in South Texas as heat threatens the lives of my chickens every year. Good layers AND good meat birds - nicely dual purpose. OK, off to get more chores done. (BYC is my #1 procrastination tool. ) - Ant Farm (Naked Neck Pusher and photo-bomber)

I have 2 birds that I thought were pullets, but now I'm not too sure. One has a big red comb, but not rooster feathers, and the other one have rooster feathers, but not a big red comb. They are 3 mouths. What do you guys think?

Quote: awesome!!!!! I love that they all just sit there!! do they get sun ?

After digging several holes and setting posts, rolling out 150' of 6' chicken wire, and stapling it up, I almost completed the containment pen. I still have to build a gate, run some guy wire along the top and bottom to stiffen the edges, and stake the bottom down so there won't be any chickens slipping out underneath. Sounds like another full day of activities with this pen. It sure is taking a lot of time away from building on the new 12'x16' coop. And guess what? I get to put up another 150' of 6' chicken wire around it as well! YAY!!! These pens won't be designed to keep critters out, but only to keep chickens in. With a killer dog next door, I can't risk losing anymore. The new coop and runs will be predator proof... as are the current two. The containment pen will allow the chickens to (semi) free-range, but as always, they'll be locked in at night.

After I stopped working on the new pen, I decided to relax and watch the chickens for a little while. The BR's that I hatched in December kept hanging around the fence in front of me, so I shot a little video. I've culled all the cockerels except for one, which I decided to keep since he's so protective of the girls... all 11 of them. He's kind of handsome as well, so I'm glad he doesn't have to go.

sweet Joey

Yup... I'm a proud papa... Four little webs...

oh red duckies!!! how cute!!!

Here are some random pictures of my chickens. They are really enjoying the nice weather.

pretty flock!!

Congrats, Phil on your ducklings.

I have a question regarding my hatch. First time for shipped eggs. The first group arrived scrambled. 6 chick eggs made it to lock down. One hatched on her own. Other was a visible pip when we got home at 4:30. She made slow progress, and made no further progress after zipping 1/3 of the way. I finally helped her out of the shell at 9:30. Yep, Sally, I know... you say to help much sooner, but when I've done that it's ended in disaster. So, she's isolated in a cup lined with paper towels now, clearly hypothermic. She was glued, and had some membrane stuck in her mouth! Has had betadine applied to umbilicus. She's tremoring in one foot. So, here's the ? Do shipped eggs take a bit longer to complete development, given that all other factors are the same? These chicks were 24 hours late in hatching. And it looks like the 12 shipped eggs that are set with them (due to hatch today) will also be late. In retrospect, if I ever hatch shipped eggs again, I think I'll set some of my own along side. Kind of like the canary in the mine. (in reverse)
I havent seen a difference, perhaps earlier if anything because the air cell is already pretty big

mornin Benny Benny you have any suggestions for a body cleans and how long??? I am about to try anything at this point!!!

Good morning everyone! Yesterday was a little busy. Urgent care for the DH who thought he was a few years (and a few pounds) younger when he jumped of a foundation wall at work. Which meant I had to build my son's swing set by myself, so it might have taken a little longer than normal.
what did they say bout ank;e? he ok?

Interesting. Might make them worth keeping, except I can't get over their appearance. A face only Mama could love. Not to mention, the lack of feathers. I can't imagine they'd do well in Maine. But, folks keep them, and say they are hardy. What color egg do they lay? The lack of feathers makes them easier to process, I've heard.

Can someone please help me,I bought an incubator called Farm Rite Pro 1200 digital.I am worried about ventilation, it only has a small hole near the bottom on each end,is that normal?I have never done this before,so just want to make sure I do everything right! Thanks to anyone who can help!

Quote: I can't imagine I'll ever catch them like this again. Yes, they get sun on about 3 sides, including full front - it was just a gloomy morning. Tarp is all the way down to the southwest to block high winds (and also sun on hot days). Have had a hard time figuring out how to arrange their ranging paddock, but they'll be heading out soon (was going to be today, but it's POURING outside...)
