We'll see ya everybody I'm off to MEXICO![]()
I have a Silkie egg that pipped the wrong end of the egg! There is a very small tear in the membrane and it hasn't made much progress in the last 18 hrs. This morning I picked it up using a warm washcloth and gently flicked off a few pieces of shell that were loose. It hasn't seemed to help. I can hear peeping and I see the beak poking and poking and not getting anywhere. Should I intervene more or leave a while longer??

CONGRATS!!! lotta chicks!!Decided it was time to open the bator to pull some chicks out. Currently have 23 out of 26 that went into lockdown. 2 look decent still just behind. 1 has a very funny shaped aircell. Should have snapped a pic but didn't think about it. Aircell was almost half the shell but it was lengthwise instead of the top portion like usual. I will try to get a pic of it and post later. Very happy with the 23 that I have. The broody that was sitting decided it was more fun to keep laying than sit so she's back in the big coop.

Bah, don't worry about it. I'm good at upsetting people with my non-politically correct straight to the point and truthful statements. I'm good at it and don't bat an eye.
Drive on........
Likely no shell - just membrane. If it was just once, that's not a concern.
If the eggs are always like that, she has likely had infectious bronchitis. Several respiratory diseases cause damage to the shell gland.
I've never seen one without a membrane.
No shell can be influenza or egg drop syndrome.
No. If it is consistent, it is something else at this age.
I must have missed that.
Same here. No need to sugar coat it. Some people need a dose of sugar with the truth - or won't accept the truth at all. I don't get it.
I grill the raccoons and feed them back to the chickens.
Shells get thinner as they age but no shell at all will be caused by influenza or egg drop syndrome caused by an adenovirus. It can be contracted from contact with infected waterfowl. Do you still have her?
You shouldn't have to do anything. The chicks should be able to hop right out and hop back in.
They hang out under mom till the siblings arrive.
I'd probably eat a rural raccoon. But I wouldn't eat one of these. I know they spend part of their time dumpster diving.
