I've been lurking (nothing all that interesting to say, just following along). But I need to go to bed early - I've got a bunch of cockerels to cull in the morning, and I'm still a bit new at it, having only done it a few times. It'll be a relief when it's done (they are getting really out of hand), but I never look forward to it...

A bit smaller than a chicken chick but a bit bigger than a quail chick if that helps any??

So they are about pheasant chick size than?

That was my thinking. The rooster wasn't fertile until they all started laying well. First egg was at ten months, and that was only two hens. I had 12 eggs in incubator for the NYHal none of which were fertile. Their chicks I hatched at the Ehal are growing well. But he's not getting all hens. His great grandfather was the same. Pretty birds just not maturing quickly. I've had them for three years hoping to get better results

So far, I set the second week's eggs, they are on day 15, and they were ALL FERTILE!! My roo has been harassing everyone. My silkies on the other hand....my dominant roo died. The white roo I added, I think is A-sexual. He is showing no interest at all in the ladies.

It turns out number six was a malpo, so I'm glad I went back for it again.
I set 12 SPR's. One early quitter and four clears. Of the seven that went into lockdown, one of them looked like a late quitter about day 15. So the six that hatched were the only six that were still alive at lockdown.

congratulations on your hatch! I can't wait for pictures of them when they are in the brooder.

Wow yea that's not happened with this group of Orpington's
I'm counting on the Altsteirer though. Both roosters have been busy with the hens already. They are the breed I want to keep. Supposed to be very productive a little flighty which concerns me somewhat. Only 5 1/2 months old. Too early to tell. I'll be watching for bullseye on eggs for breakfast tomorrow. This weekend I'm planning on building a coop within a coop for them so they can get out more without flying to neighbors or being eaten by hawks.
Too bad about the silkies roosters.
