Coyote or bobcat? I've been up close and personal with both. I was deer hunting both times, and set up on the ground. A bobcat caught the smell of the cover scent on my boots, and trailed me until it was within 40 yards. It spotted a blob (me), and stood there a good 5 minutes trying to figure out what I was. I'd bob my head, and it's ears would stand up and it's head would weave from side to side trying to figure me out. Since I wasn't hunting bobcat that day, and I was getting tired of holding my rifle on it, I eventually squalled at it and it flew out of there like it's tail was on fire! LOL!

I was hunting a cutover another year, and was set up on a little knoll with a logging road behind me. A coyote came down the road, just behind me and to my right. I'm right handed and didn't want to spook it as I turned to shoot, so I slowly put the butt of the 30-06 behind my back, stretched my left arm across in front of me as far as I could, and squeezed the trigger. The coyote was 20 feet from me when I fired. It never knew knew I was there... or what hit it.

Just goes to show... you never know what you'll encounter when you're in the wild.

You ever been a trick shot artist in a Wild West show?
I was talking about coyote, but I've never seen but one bobcat, either; headlights picked it up on a curve in a NJ road, sitting in the weeds.

My better half just smiles and waves her Visa card at me when we have those 'discussions'

Hmm... I think a little update is in order. After realizing how disappointed I was in not being able to join the HAL, and after I had reminded her of our conversation of the event, she decided to give me the go-ahead. But by the time this happened, I was so discouraged that I told her I was no longer interested in participating... and that she was right, we have too many chicks already. At this point she insisted that I go get some eggs, on one condition... not 18 eggs like the last time. I said of course not, only a dozen this time. She gave me that sideways look that always means I'm pushing the envelope, so I dropped it to half a dozen.

Sooooooooo... it looks like I'll be on board after all! Yippee!!!!

Wolves are terror and need to be shot on sight. I see a lot of dogs and livestock from your state ripped to shreds. It takes active voters to get them delisted there. Oh, and I won't tell!!!! SSS

I'm always griping on here about them....problem is that are in the U.P. The whole population of the upper peninsula is less than 300k....that's not even a major city. So as long as they are up here we don't have a prayer....as soon as they show up below the bridge and start killing their dogs maybe they'll do something.

Not a trick shooter... but a pretty decent shot. LOL! In fact, the first deer I ever killed was in the same fashion as the coyote. The deer came up from behind and to my right. The gun was behind my back when I shot it, too.
