Wish me luck ya'll. First time hatching. French copper/Wheaton/blue splash marans. Using an old hova bator with a fan. Temp is 99.5 and humidity is 47%. Tried to candle but do not know what to look for really. I expect the temp to drop after I add my eggs. Looks like I will be up for a while. Am I forgetting anything?

Good luck! :fl

@Sally Sunshine
 , know how I know I've had too much wine? My incubator (which has an automatic water pump thingie) is holding temp and humidity pending arrival of shipped eggs. It has been on for the last couple days, so I should be used to the soft little sounds when the pump goes on. I have now gotten up TWICE tonight, thinking my toilet is running. Just now almost got up again, then I remembered. :he

Sassyhens!!! Welcome!!!

yes, did you calibrate thermo and hygros?

and I think humidity is too high for marans, I would drop to 30-35 until day 7 candle.

HUMIDITY Humidity is NOT a set number!
Its a tool to get the correct weight loss in the egg!

WHY do we need less humidity to get the best weight loss for colored hatching eggs during incubation? post #36320

Some people here might suggest humidity, and I won't start an argument by saying I think it's okay because that's what I run mine at. When you candle, you are mainly checking the size of the air cell. It's good to know how large the air cell is on days 7, 14, and 18. It's not 100% accurate, but it will give you a very close idea of how much weight (in moisture) the egg is losing. There are charts that show the different stages of air cells on those days, and you should try to get your air cells to look like those. They don't have to be exact, just something close. On day 7, you also want to look for the formation of veins. These will help determine if the egg is fertile, as well as showing development in the egg. You want to look for the same thing on day 14, but the developing eggs will be more difficult to see in because the chick is starting to fill the egg with it's body. Day 18 is pretty much just checking the air cell and perhaps looking for movement. It's normal for the temp to drop after setting eggs, so it's been holding steady until you put the eggs in, let it run for 24 hours before making any adjustments. Other than keeping an eye on temp and humidity, there's not much else you can do at the moment. Try to relax and not over-think the process. You have a lot of good folks here to walk you through it!!!
