After this hatch, use some rtv sealant to bond a piece of screen or mesh over the fan so they can't get into it.

Hadn't thought about covering it before but my last hatch didn't have an issue. I'll cover it after this one.

I grabbed it out, put NEO on, removed sponge and put back in to dry in a cup.
