For those that have ever had a respiratory infection in their flock, take a look at this:

@Fire Ant Farm or anyone else, can you explain what all this means? I see that sulfadimethoxine has a susceptible next to it, does that mean that I could have been used? Just curious... Anyway, the peafowl this was for was not mine and the owner's vet ended up prescribing gamithromycin, which is a cattle drug that is given by injection once every 7 days. I think.

This is the same bird, but different drugs tested:

Sorry - just seeing this now, 1,000 posts behind, but I'll go ahead and answer (not sure if anyone else already has in the next 1000 posts!).

This is a report of the effectiveness of different antibiotics on the organism (in this case, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which happens to be a bacteria that can become typically quite resistant). The numbers represent the MIC, or Minimum Inhibitory Concentration - the concentration of the drug needed to inhibit growth of this particular bacteria that was cultured from the bird. Interpretation of what these numbers means is based on extensive clinical studies and in vitro trials (and is different for every drug/bug combination) - so just pay attention to the interpretation itself. Susceptible means it should work for this bug, Resistant means that it may not (most would not chance using a drug noted as resistant), and Intermediate means it may not work well - in human patients, if it is a drug that you can "push the dose" to higher levels safely and you have no other option, one might use an intermediate drug, but that's uncommon.

That result for sulfadimethoxine looks like a typo, though. The MIC is >256 which would be resistant. (Higher is worse. MICs may be different for peafowl, but something susceptible should never have a "greater than" sign in front of the MIC.)

Does that help?

Winding down from a full day of coop building (working into the evening with a headlamp). I'm going to catch up here before hitting the hay. Lockdown tomorrow!!!

So from what ive read you have to have 1sq ft for eacg quail hen. So it seems that i could roughly have 24 hens. Is that correct? If my pen is 2'×3'×4' thats 24 abd we wouldnt be getting more than 6 so i think we should be good.

If it's still intact, put it back in the 'bator...see what happens....nothing to lose :fl
it is intact... I'm hopeful to get 4, MAYBE 5, more- then I'll call it. 24 of 28 ain't too shabby, I think...all things considered. Thank you all [[/@]for your help - and antics! Can't wait for the HAL. I might run one more quick one of the buff brahmas @Jessimom gave me... Is it tougher with just 6? What's the best way to sterilize the bator?
