Biggest problem I have with snakes is not knowing one from another. I know there are poisonous snakes around here, with plenty of cover for them, and I ain't getting close enough, if I can help it, to determine eye shape or whether the darn thing's head is wider than it's body.

Of the poisonous snakes around here, we have Water Moccasins, Massasauga, Pygmy, Timber Rattlers, Copperheads and Corals. They all look different so you have to know the individuals. Corals have very small heads, hardly larger than their body.
I've been tromping around the woods, brush, creeks, rivers and swampy areas for over 60 years and never been bitten. It just isn't that common.

Missouri's Wildlife Code Protects Snakes​

Few Missourians realize that all snakes native to our state are protected. The Wildlife Code of Missouri treats snakes, lizards, and most turtles as nongame. This means that there is no open season on these animals, and it is technically unlawful to kill them. There is a realistic exception, however: when a venomous snake is in close association with people, which could result in someone being bitten. We hope that more people realize that snakes are interesting, valuable, and, for the most part, harmless.​

Oh Good God! I'll take my hawk problem any day!!! Yikes!

UPDATE- lost the lavender Orpington egg (the worst of the worst air cell, @Sally Sunshine.... I'm so mad- she was alive last night. Anyway- I floated the other 4, after candling seemed to yield nada. All 4 are goners

HOWEVER- while I was moving the remaining hatched chicks from yesterday, I did notice the last BCM was pipping! We have one last silkie still waiting to pip, and this Marans. If these two make it, the final tally will be a respectable 21/28 (after lockdown). 21/40 total shipped eggs, with 5 from my awesome BYC friend, and neighbor, @Jessimom

well let's just say it's a big hit got a reason....seriously loyal fans too!!! May not be your cup of tea....I love the AK shows too...I'm totally jelly..... Yeah if day the Fisher I trapped behind the house was close to that size too...they mean also....Badger are worse though....

but I never watched the other seasons I cant just jump in head first!

4 serama out during my snooze, other three are DIS like I said, I killed them I am sure having them in lockdown 6 plus days not good

Keep a good large Mediterranean rooster with each flock and you won't have many losses to hawks.
The meds are quite agile, alert and can fly up to meet the hawk as it swoops.
Minorcas, Spanish, Empordanesas and Penedesencas are good options.

Temp holdin beautifully at 101, depending on time of day it might briefly read 102 or 100 but it goes back quite fast without me doing anything. Never over 102, never under 100.

No poisonous snakes here....must be too cold for them....they got some rattle snakes down state.....we got pine snakes though....they kinda scary...they get huge....stretch across a road.....
