good morning!!! and a great one for those eggies!!! so awesome!! I so wish I could get to you! I will have to see if I can have husband run down since he has to run to pick up and drop his daughter off this weekend. I need to mapquest and keep forgeting! trying hard to keep up at home, yet alone on here! I try to chat while I am updating or finding info or helping someone but I run out of time for much!

You NEED some of these turkey eggs. I would love to show you my little hatchery too. I really need to clean some brooders though, it's starting to smell like a chicken coop in my basement.

THE EXTERNAL PIP The external pip or crack will appear on the 20th Day on the outer shell. AFTER the embryo internally pipped the air sac and became a chick and breathed in air by piercing the air cell, it will rest again which could be up to an 24 hour gap before the final less that hour ZIP/ZIPPING to hatch out of the shell.

I didn't know there was two stages of pipping, thanks for sharing that. I also have a somewhat stupid question but I haven't seen the answer to it on here, maybe I'm not looking hard enough but does it matter what direction the air cell is located when it pips? Like should it be ontop, instead of on the bottom? I faced all my eggs up so the air cell is on the top of the egg in the incubator. I just wasn't sure about that part. I also have a little giant still air incubator and thanks for the link to that info. I found it once but lost it and was trying to look it up last night. And here's my little paint Silkie.

@Sally Sunshine - would the point being made here that there are two rest periods, such that it may take LONGER for them to be ready to get out (or for assistance) if you add internal and external pip? I know it probably wouldn't have mattered for my last chick, but I'm wondering if I should have waited longer... (Trying to learn for next time).

ok, was snowing enough to annoy me and have to go sweep it away!  lol   and already cold!! 



a pip is a chick most times!!  YAYYAYYA!!!

Typically for non-shipped eggs they are laid down horizontally with the lowest part of the air cell pointing up. For Shipped eggs that might have weird air cells typically they are left mostly upright. This is so that if there is any fluid in the air cell when the chick pips internally it has a better chance of not drowning.
