HOW TO CANDLE EGGS post #40826when you folks candle, and I know it's on the chat somewhere, flat or narrow end down?
I was 50 something posts behind, and I seem to have missed the discord. I hope everyone is playing nice now!!! I totally appreciate all the information that is shared on here. I don't care if it's posted multiple times - that makes it easier to find!
I am moving 7 eggs to lock down tonight. Actually, I'm moving all the OTHER eggs over to the new unsuccessful hatching 'bator and I'm hatching these 7 in the LG. Just curious, the Incuview egg turner has the eggs lying on their side and rolls them. The LG, has them sitting upright. So, they have been upright up until now, and I'm about to lay them on their side. Is there going to be a problem? The only really wonky air cells I have are going in the lock down bator.
I asked my dad to stop at the fish store we go to and pick up a 5 gallon tank, a heater and air pump to use to add warm, moist air to the bator - he comes home with a 10 gallon tank -with plans to just add a small container to float in the warm water to use with the air bubbler. Figures he can add fish once we don't need it anymore. You have to understand that we have (2) 15 gallon tanks, (2) 20 gallon tanks and (1) 80 gallon. Did we really need another?
But, tomorrow I'm heading out of town for 4 days and heading north! Santa Cruz, Monterey, and anywhere else we feel like stopping. No itinerary planned. So, I will miss this entire hatch!!! I'm sure I'll get regular updates though!

Cyndi see the 911 section of the notes and look into hatch analysis and what went wrong... many issues can cause this or combo, I am hesitant to pull info eeeeeekkkkk uggggghhhhhh but its there for your reading! see red wording below MARKING AIR CELLS DAY 18 Candle day 18 is to determine growth, weigh, pencil mark air cell size and dispose bad eggs. It will look pretty dark and FULL in there! You may or may not see movement on this candle. Its ok if not, don’t panic! The chick may easily be resting! The embryo now occupies most of space within the egg, but NOT the air cell, the beak is against the inner shell membrane and ready to pierce it. See how that air cell is beginning to dip more to one side and if you lay the egg down it will roll into the hatching position. I set my eggs with lowest dip in the aircell up. This position for hatching is good so the chick is able to turn into position and I can easily see my pips too! Setting eggs horizontal in the hatcher actually can aid a chick to hatch 1-2 hours earlier. (HOWEVER, shipped eggs that have had loose air cells or saddle air cells, should be hatched upright but tilted just enough so that the lowest dip is somewhat upright, so if they have fluid in the air cell it may prevent drowning). AGAIN, I lay my eggs down LOWEST DIP of the AIR CELL UP! see below images, this is the normal and most likely hatching position and the chick will break through or Internally pip and externally pip in that probable area. See the image below with the x, x being lowest dip in air cell and probably pip area/s. Chick normal hatching position, Where to place your X, Example of chick position/beak in shell before internal pip drawing below: image below: drawing below:![]()

Can you help me with this? Thanks!Yes lay them horizontal to hatch. We have found that if you have them upright for a week and then try to lay them down, some DIS occurs, but only at the beginning of incubation, its best to keep the same direction until day 14 on before laying them horizontal once started upright, same for the other way around.
(Sorry if it isn't clear enough)Interesting note: The air cells are not very slanted, I had a hard time telling which side was the lower side. (Also a tad small- I might run completely dry next time) Any idea what might be causing that? It was on all 12 eggs. -Banti
