Really! I'd have never thought that span wouldn't weaken the line & open the door to any recessive traits. Learn something new every day!
In order to be successful, it requires a lot of attention, and heavy culling to keep recessive genes at bay. I've read many, many articles on this subject. Eventually the gene pool gets too shallow and new blood has to be introduced... but it should be from the same line as well (can be cousins, aunts, uncles, etc.). Crossing Reese and Radamaker RIR birds can have less-than-desirable results that can take years to correct... if ever.

I shouldn't have looked up line breeding... My head is already spinning from overload of information. That's crazy stuff
I've read many, many articles on it, and I'm not crazy... am I???

That's how people can have specific "lines" of a breed. If you're constantly introducing "new blood" than you are also introducing there problems. So if you breed for certain characteristics and want to breed out the bad stuff you have to keep a fairly "closed" line of birds until you get what you want.

Exactly.

I hope it doesn't. If it does, wrap the bator with a blanket to keep it warm...
