This is why my incubator isn't done. Painting my son's room:
700

Today he found the roller when I wasn't looking and did this in several spots:
700

So, I fixed one of the spots by doing this:
700

Tomorrow I take my father to a doctor's appointment.

The time I did spend working on the incubator was tedious stuff: sanding and cleaning the whole turning process. Still not done with that part.

Awesome fix though, very creative!

Duckling did fine at the doctor. Better than I used to! Better than she normally does too!
We spent the whole evening outside again, and just came inside 10 minutes ago. She is one tired baby, but Fig Newtons and milk are more important than bed!
Good news!!

hi. I had posted earlier and several of you helped with advice. I am almost at day 23. Only one has zipped and is having a hard time hatching after 24 hrs. Two hatched well. No other pips. I just did a float test on 12 of the eggs. Is a sinker one that sinks fully to the bottom or floats immersed under the water?

I see Nichole helped you!!! hope it went ok! I think your temps were a bit low. do you have a still air bator or fan model?

did you get the posts with the info I gave earlier?

@Jessimom
Oh my goodness! @Sally Sunshine you have far exceeded what I have found so far! That is fabulous!

I ask because I float tested 12 and nine float low in the water. 3 float almost submerged with just a little sticking out. None float high and none have sunk to the bottom of the bowl. Is there still hope?????
I have found that float test to be unreliable unless my chicks were kicking around. I threw away viable eggs because they didn't move. The only test that is reliable is candeling and sometimes that's a challenge if you don't know what you're looking at. I hope this helps. What day are they on?

Wahoo! My incubator got delivered to my school today. I am so excited...

Oh my. You did a great job of rescuing that spot!

Hope everyone is good today...just lost at cribbage...which really stinks cuz we played great they just played a little better....

This is SO cool! Please post photos of the eggs if you can, and definitely of the chicks as they hatch and grow. I will never be able to get emu unless I get more property out in the country (not enough room). So I have to experience this vicariously through you!

(As an aside, I was looking up egg shell decorating, and saw this AMAZING video of a guy who would carve art into blown emu eggs...)

No more deaths for three days!
This is FANTASTIC news!!!!!

While I'm a long way away, hearing about your chick deaths was really upsetting. (Can't imagine what it was like for you...)

Quote: My hygrometer in my Brinsea Octagon 20 Advance is off by anywhere from 6 to 10% RH (depending on the range). It's a great incubator, holds humidity and temp great - just needed to know how to set it by comparing with a calibrated thermometer and hygrometer. I know I've shared this a lot (my apologies if it's repetitive), but I was guilty of assuming that because it was new and expensive, it HAD to be right. Wrong, and I had problems with my last hatch because of it.

Quote: Oh, yeah. I got my mouth washed out with soap loads of time. Sometimes my mother, but more frequently by my grandmother.

You know, she kept a special kind of soap (blanking on which kind) JUST for washing our mouths out - because it tasted especially bad. My uncle (only 6 years older than me) was a terror, and so she had it around because of him.

I'll go blind, I just know it...

@tao chick that is an AWESOME paint job! Can you come paint my house? You have to pick the colors, though - I have a decision making disorder when it comes to my house...

Busy day today! Up BEFORE the crowing started (a miracle) - because I got to bed early and got a good night's sleep for once (which was one of the points of taking vacation time, after all). No pain killers for headaches this morning (for the first time in ages!). Alas, I ended up putting about 3 hours in at work (despite being on vacation) with something that really needs to get done. Then I spent the rest of the day bending 10 ft lengths of 3/4" EMT conduit for the tractor coops (I bent 5 tractors' worth - it's easier to do it all at the same time, since there's a bit of a knack to it). This photo has just one tractor's worth, but it gives you an idea - the 90° bend in the middle is fairly easy once you work out the right offset for your conduit bender. It's the kicks at each end that take an "eye" to get in the same plane. I bent 20 of them today - actually quite a bit of work, and in the rain (hey, neither I nor the conduit was going to melt, and it needed to get done...).

Then I put together the lumber "bones" of the first tractor in this batch (I have lumber on site and mostly prepped for three, need to get lumber to build 2 more after that).

Tomorrow, a dilemma: Take advantage of the fact that I'm on vacation and drive to my very favorite winery in New Braunfels, or begin adding conduit and hardware cloth and tarps to the tractor as soon as it gets light. Decisions, decisions...
