LOL, I went into a local feed store to get my dog/cat food. They had baby chicks. I called my family, they said "get a few". I said which kind? They said, 2 of each. I ended up with 9 chicks. We built the chicken coop about 2 months later. While we were building the coop, they would roost on the top of the netting on my daughter's trampoline cage. 3 were roosters that I re-homed.

Those chicks are all gone, but I got new baby chicks. When one of those went broody, I bought eggs for her to hatch. That was so much fun, so I bought an incubator, then a second, then a 3rd, then a 4th. I got a bunch of silkies. Now they are hatching their own eggs.

Yes, it has gotten out of control!

Don't recall who is doing the hatch updates but....

candled day 18, found a very early external pip!
3 leghorn, 4 EE, and 5 Columbian Rocks made it to lock down.
1 Columbian Rock questionable, but left in bator.
Removed 2 Leghorn early quitters.

Early pip (CR) hatched this morning, day 20! Three more external pip this morning!

If you can use it, here is a pic of #10, who had an umbilical cord still attatched to the shell. I snipped it off and put triple antibiotic ointment on the navel, although it wasn't raw.

Okay that's pretty neat! Never seen the umbilical cord before.

Our kids came home from the carnival with 3 chicks about 35 years ago. The chicks grew into 2 roosters & a hen. We had no coop or run, so the birds roamed the property at will 'til something got the hen. The then-grown roosters got mean, to the point that the kids were afraid to go outside; exit 2 roosters.

Fast forward 20 yrs... my son & his wife were here visiting from WI. They went out alone one day, and came back with some chicks that the DIL had fallen in love with. They went & bought a supply of 1x3's & chicken wire, & a coop was born. When their vacation came to a close, they went back to WI, leaving the chicks behind, which I needed like another hole in my head. Two coops (soon to be 3) and 3 flocks later, I'm still keeping chickens; will as long as I'm able. I only have 5 hens & a rooster, and only incubate for replacements, but I like having them around, and we certainly enjoy the fresh eggs.

I went to Tractor Supply to look for fencing for my first real garden. I was so amused by the "country hick store" that I began to walk around, looking at all the country people decorations. And then I heard it. The sound of hundreds of chicks peeping, calling for their mother. I was raised that chicks were cute, but they grew up to be ugly, smelly, dirty chickens. Guess who changed everyone's mind? I have a sister coming in a month or so to get some of my chicks.
Btw, all of my chicks the first year rode home on the motorcycle. :lau
