I've read somewhere before that sometimes birds just drop dead for no apparent reason.Thank you Chaos...now hoping it's not some freak thing that's going to affect the whole flock. Ugh.

Everyone is responsible for their own hatch, and at times, might have to make a decision to assist or not. Hopefully one learns over time, and their decision making improves. Sally cannot be available 24/7 to help everyone make these decisions. What she has kindly done was created several articles, hatching 101, helpful notes and links, and Assisting hatches, to help anyone that chooses to use these resources to improve their hatches, and needed information handily available at difficult times. Ultimately everyone that chooses to hatch eggs is responsible for their own hatches and makes the final decision themselves.

CHICKS Wet? Sticky? Stuck? Yellow Gel? What did I do Wrong? post #25379
how is the chick?
hey even I can get pretty mean when necessary!@kwhites634
How's tucker doing with figuring out who the man is.
Got my first chickens just over 5 years ago, had my first run in with a spur this afternoon. "Shaggy" caught me off guard this afternoon as I was checking feed and water. I saw him coming but wasn't able to move in time after I realized his intentions. Initially didn't think anything of him coming at me like that because the hens and him both will follow me around all over the yard and if they get more than 30-40 foot away they will charge but then stop right at my feet. I'm not typically the type to treat violence with violence but when he tried for a 2nd attempt with me facing him the only defense I could think of was to put my boot up and give him a steel toe to the chest. Some may look at that as cruel but he broke skin on my calf and gave me about a quarter sized bruise, through blue jeans, the first time so I wasn't taking any chances for the second time. He calmed back down after that and went in the run and called his girls like nothing ever happened. All are tucked in and roosting now. He's my only rooster and I'm enjoying being able to hatch my own eggs but if he tries that crap again he's done. Any thoughts or advice. He's around a year old and is typically calm as can be. Sorry for the long post.
Got caught up and heading to bed. Back up and going in about 5 hrs. See yall in the morning.
Oh yeah........just don't want to go there expecting to win.....probably won't....would be great if I did though....God knows I could use a New four wheeler.....but I don't want to leave disappointed.....
I think so, lol! I sure have bugged him about it enough!!!Everyone is responsible for their own hatch, and at times, might have to make a decision to assist or not. @rIrs roost @BantyChooks Did you get your temps straightened out and where to set thermometer etc???Thanks Sally and everyone for all your help. I'll be laying them down touching with low point of the air cell up.MARKING AIR CELLS DAY 18 Candle day 18 is to determine growth, weigh, pencil mark air cell size and dispose bad eggs. It will look pretty dark and FULL in there! You may or may not see movement on this candle. Its ok if not, don’t panic! The chick may easily be resting! The embryo now occupies most of space within the egg, but NOT the air cell, the beak is against the inner shell membrane and ready to pierce it. See how that air cell is beginning to dip more to one side and if you lay the egg down it will roll into the hatching position. I set my eggs with lowest dip in the aircell up. This position for hatching is good so the chick is able to turn into position and I can easily see my pips too! Setting eggs horizontal in the hatcher actually can aid a chick to hatch 1-2 hours earlier. (HOWEVER, shipped eggs that have had loose air cells or saddle air cells, should be hatched upright but tilted just enough so that the lowest dip is somewhat upright, so if they have fluid in the air cell it may prevent drowning). AGAIN, I lay my eggs down LOWEST DIP of the AIR CELL UP! see below images, this is the normal and most likely hatching position and the chick will break through or Internally pip and externally pip in that probable area. See the image below with the x, x being lowest dip in air cell and probably pip area/s. Chick normal hatching position, Where to place your X, Example of chick position/beak in shell before internal pip drawing below: image below: drawing below:![]()

WHY LAY HATCHING EGGS HORIZONTAL TOUCHING: It is now known that the different embryos communicate with each other by a series of clicking sounds, the rate of clicking being the important feature. Ensuring the eggs on the hatching eggs are in contact with each other facilitates the synchronization of hatching where the eggs are incubated in a modern machine. This assists in reducing the time between when the first and last chicks hatch. @rIrs roost

Marthas Marans won the MASS show too. from her big guys only going on 7 weeks, I have two brothersUnfortunately, he came up from behind me again a few days ago, running into the back of my leg. We were all in the run at the same time; he, the 5 hens, so far, he's only run into me. This is the 1st time he's ever had hens of his own. Since our last run-in, he's only taken corn from my hand once. When I open the coop in the morning he's the last one out. If I'm standing too close, he won't come out at all 'til I back off a bit. I guess when he got his own ladies, he came into his own they all bear watching. Just like your Shaggy, Tucker's my only rooster. He's doing what I got him to do; if he chooses not to be friendly that's his problem. If he chooses to make it a serious problem, I guess we'll have to make a decision. I hope it doesn't come to that.[@=/u/17372/kwhites634]@kwhites634[/@] How's tucker doing with figuring out who the man is. morning whites hugs hugs and love too!!Looks like a good time to go to bed Catch y'all in the morning
not me...I only got an acre...and already have a old John Deere 110......that's all I need here....Heck I'm just happy to get a free dinner out of it...I would rather win a tractor if I dream. I can't afford one, but it gets harder every year to push the round bales around. I am going to try to get a bale buggy this year if I can find a used one.
Even your chickens drink JD?
yup...Even if you don't win it's a night out on the town which is always good.
I am not knocking it, I hope you win, and it is helpful and fun. Plus a free nice meal either waynot me...I only got an acre...and already have a old John Deere 110......that's all I need here....Heck I'm just happy to get a free dinner out of it...![]()
Well crud!!!! Hubby went to check on everyone this morning and one of my barred rocks was just laying dead in the coop. No reason that we can see - everyone else is acting fine - happy, healthy...she was just dead as a door nail. No signs of trauma or issues. Hmmm.![]()
