Been a while.
I'm sure you've said, and I missed or forget it, but what breed / breeds is your dog?

She is Anatolian X Pyranees. About 140 pounds and very tall and fast. When she's not busy with predators, she's looking for mice and gophers to pounce on. She's very amusing and gets along great with all the livestock, but still have a problem with her not liking my dobermans.

Oh of those 2 you probably want to go with a Kenyan. Jamaican is mild.

Update on my gimpy chick...

I had every intention of giving the chicks Corid, but found that in a desert like environment the vets don't even know what it is. The 3 feed stores I checked with, don't carry it. 2 of which had never heard of it, and the third had used it in the past on their own flock. So, I ordered it, should be here tomorrow.

The main brooding pen - all seem to be healthy, but when I changed the bedding last night, in a deeper section of bedding, under the heat plate, there was a tiny, long dead, flat baby. I never knew I had to check UNDER bedding to find a baby. It was probably the first to die.

So, we have 2 dead babies and 1 gimpy baby that seems to be holding her her own, still unable to put any weight on her left leg, but she is active and alert. She eats and drinks.

We are now counting babies every time we change their water.

Second baby brooding pen-these are all about 1 to 2 weeks old. One chick had curled toes, they are getting better, but it gets it boot off every 48 hours or so. Every other chick that we put in, walked fine. But yesterday, we noticed another one with both feet with curled toes. That is not something you can overlook when you are moving chicks from one pen to another - what would cause it?

As far as the babies in the big pen, if they are showing NO signs of being sick, do I need to treat them? If f I have 3 chicks with Cocci, do I need to assume the entire flock was infected?

My question is, how would the chicks have access to coccidia in a brooder with fresh bedding. They have to be in contact with soil to consume any oocysts. It doesn't come from the air. So, IMHO, especially since you're in a desert environment, I doubt it is coccidiosis so I wouldn't treat.

Sudden death in chicks that age, range from sudden death syndrome (common) to pullorum, infectious anemia, necrotic dermatitis and necrotic enteritis. I doubt it is any of those since they're rare. Sometimes chicks just fail to thrive. SDS cause is unknown.
