I've culled many hundreds of chickens. It is never easy, especially baby chicks.

That is the reality of animal husbandry. We must do the right thing or leave it to the big poultry operations.
I'm a coward... last one I took to the vet.

I got off early and went to work on the coop only to find it appropriated :) They were laying on it in the sun, but stood up when I got close.

That is so expensive. You must be rich.

I have a friend that should be wealthy but has spent several thousands of dollars EACH on many animals; dogs, turkeys, ducks, parrots, chickens, cats, etc..
I think her accountant told her the total one year for vet bills alone was $30,000. She's rather poor today.

She let a broody turkey sit on infertile eggs too long. After $3,500 in physical therapy and other vet help, it died anyway.
Not good.

Yes - I had decided to cull, but was glad I didn't have to. Certainly easier.
So sorry!

Thank you - and thank you for your help. I feel like I learned a lot that I didn't know thanks to your input.

Quote: I have used the vinegar and baking soda gas chamber method a few times with chicks that hatch and are not right, and would have used that here. While there are tweaks to doing it right, I am happy with that method for a tiny bird - if you do it right, they fall asleep first, and then you up the CO2 in the little chamber to finish after they fall asleep. (Still sad...)

One of the reasons I had decided to cull was exactly this - at that point, it didn;t really have a place in my breeding plans, and that's what I was going to keep - breeders. Even if it had survived, I was going to band it and grow it out and process rather than keep for a breeder. But yes, it's harder with the babies - we're programmed to protect baby animals...

Poking my head in...haven't been able to catch up but hoping maybe later...maybe...hubby went back to work and 2 oldest are at school but youngest and I have the flu now. He just covered me, the couch, himself and 2 blankets in projectile vomit. Yeah. Guess I was over due for that.

Anyway, it's a miracle I set some eggs and this time, I've decided to leave the plug out of the hovabator the whole time (vs last time when I didn't know ask left it in until day 18 or 19 I think?!

) It's more humid now then it was in March too.

Well - happy Monday!! Gotta load my little barf machine up to go pick up his sister...pray he doesn't cover the car in vomit...& if I'm not around later...well...things probably aren't going well! But I feel like HOPEFULLY half the family is on the mend...

Oh and an update on my older son - his blood culture has 2.5 more days to develop but they said nothing had grown so far, so that's good...however his white cell count was still suppressed and he still has the severe sinusitis AND they said a strep test also came back positive. Thankfully he's already on antibiotics.

I continue my disinfecting adventure this evening!!!
