INCUBATING w/FRIENDS! w/Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs No problem!

Okay, I just candled (not day 14 yet, I just felt like it) and ONE DARK BRAHMA IS ALIVE!!!!!!!
This is the one I was not sure on last time because it was very porous.

All the rest are clear that I thought were clear, no NN were fertile. :/

The rest (including the LO!!) are alive and well! No more quitters, so I think I'm doing something right.

[COLOR=333333]I can happily report that "Balut" has been moved from sick bay and has now joined the general population. It was doing great, so I put it in the brooder with it's sibling to see how it would fare and how it would be treated. It made a mad dash to the heater plate where the other chicks were hanging out, and they didn't give it a second glance. In no time at all it was scooting all over the brooder looking for food. It obviously wasn't happy eating in the incubator, because it was literally climbing over it's siblings to get to the next morsel! [/COLOR] [COLOR=333333]Looking a little rough around the edges, but don't let that fool you. It's full of spunk!!![/COLOR] [COLOR=333333][COLOR=B42000] [/COLOR][/COLOR] [COLOR=333333]Here it is diving into the middle of the pile...[/COLOR] [COLOR=333333] [/COLOR] [COLOR=333333]Even if it turns out to be a dud, my wife has already claimed it as her pet. She thinks just because she nursed it back to health she's supposed to be attached, or something goofy like that... [/COLOR]

This will seem harsh. Note that I will not assist, especially with broodies. If they don't hatch, they weren't meant to. Not all were meant to be champions. In every species, a certain percentage are weaklings that shouldn't reproduce their kind. In nature the weaklings get picked off by predators making the species genetically stronger. Note that we are animal husbanders, it is incumbent on us to try to make our animals more vigorous - not more sickly. As hatchers, it isn't our job to help all birds. It is our job to do our best to raise the most robust birds possible. Assisting birds too weak to hatch isn't helping anyone but that individual bird that will weaken the breed if it is allowed to breed. Others surely disagree and have different agendas. I want the most vigoroust birds possible. Edited for spelling and grammatical errors.

I agree completely, survival of the fittest, I unfortunately helped one of mine and it cost me, BUT I wanted that one breed and didn't care about the others. I am in it just for me, so long as I have what I want strutting around my yard I'm happy but if they are too dumb to hide from the Hawks-so be it

Not harsh. Eggs incubated by broodies here almost always hatch (chickens, ducks, peafowl, guineas), so I very rarely need to assist those. Since I sell the majority of my ducklings for $5 to people that are going to eat them, for me, not assisting is like burning a five dollar bill. Same thing with peafowl. When pea eggs are incubated by broodies they rarely need assisting, but a peachick lost because I didn't assist is like burning a twenty dollar bill. -Kathy

I just checked on a few of my " questionable " eggs and they were still no gos but thats ok , there were about four non fertile and three that had blood rings and a coupke that looked like they quit after a week or two so gross explosion was avoided , on the other hand i got two more pipped so fingers crossed, tomorrow before i leave on our troops camping trip i have a few more to go into lock down so maybe ill have more babies when i come back on sunday

Thanks. Today sucked, but I made it through the entire work day. I had stuff to do, and a patient management conference at 4pm. Also, this is something that just happens to me sometimes - the worst thing possible to do is to be still or lay down, gotta keep moving, and I tend to be on the move a lot at work, so it was best that I stayed. I didn't yell at anyone (minor miracle!!!!) Got home, started in on chicken chores, moving around a lot, and it felt a lot better. Started feeling bad again when I sat down afterwards. Soooooo... CHICKENS HEAL BAD BACKS!!!!! (At least that's what my Chicken-Math-Self tells my Sane Self...)

Hi guys was a long day again so busy.... I finished the ball joints on my truck.... Tomorrow headed to town lunch with the wife.
Also have to buy a big cage to put ducklings in... They are out growing current one.... I was going to make a cage but I'm going to pull my well and put a new well in this weekend.... So I will be too busy....
I candled today.... Got growth on all 12 duck eggs... Threw a bantam egg in for the heck of it....
