Torturous!! That is what incubation is!

Agreed! I accidentaly hit the thermostat on the incubator when I was adding water right before leaving and I didn't notice, it was at 98 when I got back home. :rant

I need to watch this bator for the whole incubation period!

Sorry that happened hope they are ok.

Night Liz. :frow

Lol got excited thanks!! Nights to you as wel!!

It's still in the making.
gotta hurry up a bit

Speed-O-Bators take time to build.

Most people will wait until the hatched chicks have dried off before moving them to the brooder. As far as helping the other chick yes I would say after 36 hrs that it's probably stuck. Read over the article I provided for a decent overview of assisted hatching. Its not as scary as it sounds. Just go slow, keep it moist and STOP if you see blood.

Thanks! I had read that before but I reread it. The chicks membrane was rather tan looking so I slowly assisted. Left and came back and he's out!! Also transferred the others to the brooder.

I have a question about roosters. About  3 months ago, I got a 4 month old white silkie roo that had an impacted crop.  We healed that.  He still has a very swollen crop, but it's always soft.  He is now 7 months old.  He doesn't crow.  He spends all his time cuddled up to the other white hens, but isn't mounting them.  I thought when my dominant roo died, this roo might step up to the plate.  He hasn't.  Some of the YOUNGER silkies are trying   The youngsters are crowing.  White roo, not a sound.  Are there A-sexual roosters?

Yes, once I have published in BYC a link to a clip from Turkey
That shows a rooster seething on a clutch of eggs making broody hen
Noises.

(Hey, for you guys out there, here's a secret - WE COME WITH HAIR...

Owwww!! I had swimmers ear a while ago that I didn't treat, and my eardrum ended up rupturing- That was bad enough, so sorry!

My head DID explode, but I didn't have time to type the magnitude of cute out so I just repeated "DUCKBIRDS OF SWEET WEBBS AND ATTITUDE WITH ADORABLE FLUFF AND BILLS" ovfer anhd over!!

Oh, yikes!!!! Yeah, I waited longer than I should have, and my ear canal was almost swollen shut (hence the need for debridement and then placement of the ear wick), but I was very fortunate that the eardrum was ok. I did a bunch of reading about it, and:

1) I think it's the fact that it's summer (and I sweat a lot) and I do all my chicken chores with earbuds in listening to podcasts (Star Talk with Neil Degrasse Tyson, of course - might as well get smart while scooping poop). I think that's why I got it.

2) I though I was being a silly little wuss until I read about how essential pain control was and that opiates may be needed. I promptly found some left over Tylenol-with-codeine in the back of the medicine cabinet and took some. I feel SOOOOO much better!!!! (OK, so a little loopy, BUT BETTER!!!

Speaking of hogs check out how big the five week old
Piggies are next to their 400+ lb momma.

@kwhites634 @Sally Sunshine
@daxigait , not sure if I've said so (at least recently), but I remain so impressed with the amount of hard, hard work that you do, maintaining your property and animals while also having your pretty demanding job.

And I don't know much, but those look like pretty happy pigs to me!!!

That is what I have heard a few times from folks (backed up with small or absent/hard to find testicles when culled). Some people produce and keep capons around not just for meat but also to act as nannies for baby chicks.

My newbies!

And Prince Charming started crowing, but he only does it when he is inside the coop.
Awwwwwww.....

Sally, your birds are lovely (and I'm sorry, but ANY photo of a Serama just cracks me up - such a funny little stance).

OK, so the Tylenol with codeine is kicking in and while it still hurts, I feel SO much better... But it still hurts too much to chew - looks like soup is on the menu for the foreseeable future...

Is it really this slow, or is there something wrong with BYC? I've noticed all day that the thread posts weren't updating under subscriptions...

Ok so we've got two chicks! Ones gotta be a blue eng orp/speckled Sussex & the other a silver penciled rock over Dominique I think but they're identical and both look like my English orp did as a chick so lol. I just checked in there and I can see the markings on their shells now at least but also I've got 6 more pipped shells and I'm hoping that they get out tonight.. And by tonight I mean when my husbands home I'm going to hang out down there like a spaz lol. I would love up wake up to all of them hatched and fluffed honestly and get them out of there!

Congratulations!!! How many eggs do you have in there? I totally understand the obsessive viewing. Even though this is probably my 30th hatch, I still get up several times during the night to check on them. So have fun and be a spaz like as you want!! Where is your brooder?

Mine were late to hatch. I'm on day 22 and I've had 7 of 12 chicks hatch today. One just pipped. That leaves just 2 eggs unpipped..

oh congrats on your babies making their way out! There are 22 total in there, one I'm not sure will be able to get out because the air cell is weird and if it pips in the wrong direction could be harmed and might be upside down? I've dealt with that but it's alive so I'm hanging into hope for it, 20 from one rooster and 2 from the other and I've got one of each hatched and 6 pipping... That leaves 14 left to prove they're planning on coming out. Quite a few I think perhaps I should have made myself take out a couple of the trays on the turner... I have problems hehe, I literally hatch from the first eggs I get until it gets cool out. My brooders are downstairs in our basement and the incubators are next to them. I turn off the dehumidifier and try and limit use of the back door but having them down there does affect the temps. I get a lot of fluctuations :-/ it mostly annoys me that my husband has in his head backward the temp turner thing on the hova bator though, he cranked it a few times when he meant to turn it down and I think things are ok but that hatch isn't for a week so we will see how those fellas made out. I imagine that plus a power outage maybe they'll hatch a mite early :-/ not ideal but they're moving so probably doing ok. This hatch though first of the year :-D I might be logging it on facebook lol cause people ask and then I get all these people private messaging me saying they love it - we homeschool so the kids in our groups enjoy seeing it all so much so this one is extra fun. I fear there will be 22 black ish chicks in the brooder though lol, luckily the next few batches should be colorful lol. Chicken nerd time. I have to catch some chicks hatching and I heard one scream from through the floor pecking it's egg earlier so I imagine in an hour or so something's bound to happen.... Or as soon as I fall asleep they're all hatching lol
