Morning MC. Glad you caught most of them. Mine are in a coop they can't get it and hopefully predators can't get in but as we've seen they manage to find a way. Lost 9 meat chicks to a skunk in one night. Thought I had problem fixed and he got 3 more the next night. Then on the trap has rarely not been set.

Very good thanks, I have met my freind for lunch,( he became a grandpa 3 dayes ago.) Have some bear ( I know ChickenCanoe I know! But it is a special occasion! ) and a very nice lunc in a grate restorant.

Congratulations to your friend. Lunch sounds like it was good. How was the bear prepared? I have only had it as sausage and ground meat.
I am alright. Getting started on another day of making money to pay the bills.

In the future, I will not be so lazy. I will have a pen for the boys. I meant to this time, but... Yeah, I have things to work out in my head. Definitely making some kind of coop for just the boys though. I have about 14 weeks until the next batch. 22 if I wait for any I can't sell that the two broodies are hatching.

Interesting. I usually just chuck the bodies in the woods and let nature clean them up.

I used to do that but then realized I was throwing away some good animal protein the chickens could make use of. And after all, some of my chickens contributed to their size.
I used to harvest squirrels because I fed them at my bird feeder.

I caught six last night, and one got away. I will have to find him this morning. I will also have to search for more. I know I missed the gray cockerel, but he gets to live anyway.
This is not my first time processing, but it will be my first time having to actually know how to clean the bird.
They are twenty weeks. The ducks, if we do any, are three months.

ChickenCanoe, I know that it drives you crazy. But, for some reason I just don't get predator attacks on my property.

Check a youtube video. I open the neck cavity and separate the esophagus, trachea and crop so that when I reach into the rear end they'll slide out along with the rest of the guts. Cut all around the vent to separate it completely. Then you can reach in and pull everything out at once.

You don't get them - yet.
Wildlife is thick here. I just went out to collect eggs and before I got to the first coop which is about 100' from the back door, 3 rabbits and 3 squirrels ran across my path.

Building a getaway shelter? If you're going with posts I'd put them in the ground. Could also use something like these.

I use deck blocks almost exclusively. It sure beats digging holes.

If any of you have dealt with cattle how high should I put the cross bars? I have two for each side.

I finally got the four post in the ground. I am going to attach the orange head gate. The silver panels are just to keep everything out for now.

5' should be sufficient.
We never used metal fencing but I like it. We always used barbed wire. Sometimes hog wire topped by 2 strands of barbed wire.

I thought about those, but I don't know that I've ever seen any. I'm wondering if they're available for 6x6's.
No getaway; essentially an equipment shed; probably put a brooder in the ground level end.

Deck blocks are at Lowe's, Home Depot, Menard's and any other big box store. They're in the aisle with concrete blocks and cement.
I've never seen them for 6" posts but you can use 2X lumber horizontally and then attach your 6" to that.
Why do you need such beefy posts? Not for a chicken coop.

I would think Lowes or HD would have them. Not sure if they make them for 6x6's.

Maybe a special order item.

104 is miserable - especially with the humidity we have.
I just heard on the news that St. Louis ranks #3 on a list of the most miserable cities to mow lawns in. Birmingham, AL was #1.

Spurs are fairly common on Mediterranean breed hens. Not a desirable trait but not a disqualification. Most of my hens have hens and they get that big by the time they're about 3.

At least you caught most. I never had a predator attack until this year, lost a duck a few months ago and a broody hen and her clutch about a month ago.
