I have 6 chicks out and one almost completely zipped from those due yesterday. I see no pips in 4 others. I hope I can pull them in the next couple hours and get the others turned.

Now for soapbox time. This is really important for the future of backyard and small flock poultry. There have been over 600 cases this year across the country of people contracting salmonella from handling pet poultry.
For those that allow small children to handle poultry, don't allow kissing and make sure you wash them up immediately afterward.
This goes for adults as well. Always wash hands with soap and water immediately after handling poultry or anything where poultry live.
It is recommended to never keep poultry in the house - including chicks and ducklings.
As someone who has fought in city after city across the area challenging city councils to allow chicken keeping, it is always an issue that is raised as to why they shouldn't be allowed. They don't understand why we don't want to buy store eggs and chicken meat.
I've had council members quote the CDC word for word on multiple occasions saying that the CDC recommends:
  • Always wash hands thoroughly with soap and water right after touching live poultry or anything in the area where the birds live and roam;
  • Do not let live poultry inside the house; and
  • Do not let children younger than 5 years of age handle or touch chicks, ducklings or other live poultry without adult supervision.

I counter by saying that they say the same about dogs and cats but dogs and cats are legal.
If we continue to allow this to get out of control, the pendulum of more backyard poultry being allowed will certainly swing the other way.

Quote: you betcha about the salma, I have hand sanitizee outside and at almost every coop and of course the goat pen too!
Have you read the studies about treating the eggs with a Hydroperoxide solution to help prevent salma? I havent really looked into what they have found as far as effects on hatching eggs, etc. Saw it when it came in my email with one of the poultry digests I get.

UGH got this about four hours ago on my Cell Alerts

Usually. I did have a teacher once who threw a chalkboard eraser at me.
That's all? You must have grown up in the era of political correctness.

Did you return the favor by throwing the chalkboard at her? Should have.
That wouldn't have flown where I went to school. I went to high school at an all boys, private, catholic military institute. Discipline was paramount.
I and most of my classmates were hit with rulers, pipes, fists, etc. more times than I could count, sometimes all in the same day.
At one point some parents took one of the teachers (the one with the pipes) and the school to court. The school's position was, "You sent your sons to CBC to be disciplined. If you don't want them disciplined, send them somewhere else." The school won the case.

I get those a couple times a day. We're not even getting below the low 80s at night for the next few days. When you're hot and sweaty all day and don't get a break at night, it really sucks.
I did get a fan installed on one of the coops yesterday though. It is inside a window and blows right at the roost and it felt a lot better overnight.

@BantyChooks I am down to 3 eggs in the nest and 16 in the incubator.
:thumbsup

I think that's all she threw because that's what she had in her hand at the time. I guess I'm lucky it wasn't a textbook or something

Quote: I had a Vice Principal stop me in the hall for not wearing a belt. At the time, I was wearing a new pair of "Continentals", which had no belt loops; just a short non-functional belt in the back for decoration. I reminded her that there were no belt loops to put a belt through. She said it didn't matter; school policy required boys to wear belts, whereupon she produced a length of rope or twine, which she tied around my waist. When she was finished, I pulled my pocket knife out (yeah, there actually was a time when most guys carried pocket knives wherever they went...they were tools) and cut the "belt", right there in front of her. Never heard another word out of her!
