It's a bear alone; I wouldn't even try it.

I've always put up my own gutter and it is a bear. The longest straight run I have is only 20'. The hardest so far was that 20' that is 30' in the air. I had to solder two 10' sections of copper together and then put that up. The saving grace is that I had a bucket truck at the time.

I've spent the night on our open porch a couple times; a cot, a blanket, and a citronella pot burning...lungs full of fresh air...tough to beat.
Started to spend the night in Grandpa's hammock once when I was a kid. Wind in a corn field close up sure does make scary noises when you're not used to it.

Mosquitos is the only problem. Otherwise, I'd probably sleep out a lot more.

It has rather extensive damage. It is an a-frame. The roof is sound, but the floor..... Well, more 'n a few colonies of ants ate holes in it. Not sure what to do about it.

Eradicate the ants and install a new floor.

I had a great uncle who slept on the porch. He had a bed out there and everything. I guess "sleeping porches" were a thing?

This is why camps are still important! We have a "survivor" camp that has kids in yurts in the woods. They cook two meals a day over a fire all by themselves: chopping veggies, mixing and stirring, etc. They eat lunch inside the dining hall because it's just too hot. But rain or shine they're out there! I love it.

I'm hoping next year we can call it "trailblazers" and have like a pioneer theme. I want them to bring eggs from the coop and veggies from the garden to "barter" for flour and cheese, whatever they need for their meal. Of course they'll still get their food regardless, so maybe they can barter for fancy desserts.

That sounds cool. Except for the heat.

As suggested, guppies would be good. You could add some other schooling fish like zebra danios. And perhaps a lone betta.

I wonder if Canada Geese could be used the same way. I could show researchers a seemingly endless supply of the filthy pests! You think ducks are bad? Ducks aren't even in the same league!
They have so many ponds & food sources here in crop fields that they stay here year around. Not all, but the vast majority does, anyway. They make such a mess at the local park that the town hired a guy with a dog, a kayak, and a remote-control toy boat to run them off. If the birds are on shore he sends the dog to chase them off. If they're on the water, he sends the boat in to run them off. If that fails, he gets the kayak out and heads into them. The whole idea, of course, is to harass the geese so much that they go somewhere quieter.

My coop fairy has a business of removing Canadians from ponds and properties where they aren't welcome. Places like cemeteries, schools and office parks.
She uses border collies.

We used to keep a flock of 100 white leghorn layers. I've also had black leghorns which I really appreciated. I had one that went broody often.

For cold, Russian Orloffs and Canadian Chanteclers are champs. Wyandottes, Rocks, Brahmas, Cochins and Buckeyes are good for cold too.
For both extreme cold and heat, I vote for Jaerhons. They're from Norway but being a smaller bird with tight feathering, they've handled our summers just fine. They are prolific layers of white eggs.

When we try other breeds when our flock gets smaller again, I'll look into some of those. For us, it's not just the heat, it's the humidity. We get heats in the 100-110 ranges, but then add in 40-80% humidity... and our poor birds aren't happy.

We freeze gallon jugs and put that out there for them to lay on along with refilling the pool to make sure the water stays cool, plus mist all the dirt/ground to help cool it off.

That's the humidity we have but we are almost never as low as 40. Our humidity is usually between 60 and 90%.
When the weatherman talks about a comfortable low humidity day, it is normally 50-60%
Other heat resistant birds to consider are Catalanas and Cubalayas.
Foot baths help a lot.

I'm always amazed how freaked out people are by the "diseases" that poultry carries... yet will let their dog and cat sit on their furniture and lick them after licking their butts.

Are you guys constantly worried/obsessed with getting diseases from your birds?

I'm of the "wash your hands well and not stress about it." variety of person.

I don't freak out but prevention is wise.
It is incumbent on us small holders to take precautions. There were over 600 people infected with salmonella in the first half of this year in 45 states. All were associated with backyard chickens. Over 130 were hospitalized, including 1 death. 120 of those were children under the age of 5.
If this trend continues. Cities and counties are going to start cracking down. It will make it ever more difficult to get chickens legalized for those who want to keep them.

I am on parking lot this morning at church. A family just came in that has adopted two special needs girls. They are about sixish. They were getting out their wheelchairs and loading one. I commented about having their hands full. They said yes one had been screaming for half an hour. It makes me feel petty for the things I complain about watching them unload, get them in chairs, touch up hair, wipe faces... I was imagining all it intails and selfishly glad it was not me. I am not sure I could do it.

Imagine if we lived in Syria. But for the grace of god.

Orioles are coming to a stadium near you after they get done with the Yankees. You should try to make one of the games. The Orioles are pretty close to a "now or never" situation for a wild card slot, so they're hungry. I believe your Tigers are right up there too in their division, although in better shape than the Orioles.

Inter league play is over for the year. The only teams the Cards played this year were the Angels, Mariners, Rangers, Oakland As, Astros and KC.
Cards were in sole possession of the second wildcard spot last week but they lost 5 of the previous 7 games before winning today.
If you get to see top plays tonight, there was a great double play when Moss caught a fly in deep left field with the bases loaded and threw a strike home to get the runner coming in from 3rd.

Keep meaning to tell you that I could have gone to a Giants game the other day for free. Company was given 4 tickets to game and they were given first come first served basis. The seats were 15 rows up right behind home plate. The gals that got the tickets had a blast. They are huge Giants fans. Giants lost.

We're big baseball fans. As are most St. Louisans. Cards are very frustrating this year. They had the lowest ERA in baseball last year but the worst team batting.
Normally, pitching and defense are their hallmarks. This year both have faltered but the hitting is on a tear. They broke a franchise record a couple days ago of 21 straight games with at least 1 home run. They ran the streak to 23 games today.

I have 2 special needs boys.
It's not wheelchair-ish, but my youngest has health issues I have to watch carefully, and my oldest has mental health issues, where he needs constant supervision.
Fun stuff! Never a dull moment.

However, wheelchair bound kids are a totally different kettle of fish. I admire their fortitude to adopt kids like that! After raising my own, I know I could handle high-energy kids, or kids with learning disabilities, or minor behavioral problems. I don't know if I could handle one that needed 24/7 care with feeding/bathing/pushing around in a wheelchair. I think that would be very hard. It takes a very special person to take on that kind of responsibility on purpose.
(with that said, I never thought I'd have special needs kids at all, and realized I ended up being able to handle it alot better than I would have thought, pre-being in that scenario.)

Ok, I know I talked big the other day and I still stand by all that... Today I just have some questions.

Some of y'all process any bird (regardless of breed or sex) at any time (regardless of age or size)? This is the one my boy named Cow Meat. I weighed him today, he's 3.5 lbs. He felt thin when I picked him up, but he's got some HRIR in him and I don't want to wait another six months for him to fill out. So he's not going to be a pretty table bird, but he'd make good gumbo, right?

I think he'll taste just like chicken. No matter how old you let them get, they'll never get the big breast of a CornishX.
I figure if a raccoon can find enough to eat on a chick, so can I.

I put some sacrifice birds in with my quarantine silkie, for company. She's so mean! I had to make them a little safe house to hide under, and now I'm standing out by the cage so they can eat. She's afraid of me, but they aren't. Hope they work through this quickly.

Also this old gal is acting broody. She's 5-6 years old and slept on chicks last night, now hasn't left that nest all day.

I put some sacrifice birds in with my quarantine silkie, for company. She's so mean! I had to make them a little safe house to hide under, and now I'm standing out by the cage so they can eat. She's afraid of me, but they aren't. Hope they work through this quickly.

Also this old gal is acting broody. She's 5-6 years old and slept on chicks last night, now hasn't left that nest all day.
