They add support so that the corrugated material on top of them doesn't get crushed down. Also so that there aren't any small gaps for uninvited guests.

Nope, no feathers have ever been there. No pulling, he's never had anything to pull. LOL. Whew, glad to know, he has never had any tail feathers to speak of. LOL! Poor guy!
