Learned the meaning of two acronyms yesterday, AMDUCA and ELDU

  • AMDUCA - The Animal Medicinal Drug Use Clarification Act
  • ELDU - extra-label drug use

Drugs with No Allowable Extra-Label Uses in Any Food-Producing Animal Species
  • CHLORAMPHENICOL
  • CLENBUTEROL
  • DIETHYLSTILBESTEROL (DES)
  • FLUOROQUINOLONE–CLASS ANTIBIOTICS
  • GLYCOPEPTIDES — all agents, including VANCOMYCIN
  • MEDICATED FEEDS
  • NITROIMIDAZOLES — all agents, including DIMETRIDAZOLE, IPRONIDAZOLE, METRONIDAZOLE and others
  • NITROFURANS — all agents, including FURAZOLIDINE, NITROFURAZONE and others

The drugs listed above can be used in food animals, but only if they are labeled for use in that species. Baytril, a fluoroquinolone, is a good example... It is labeled for use in cattle and swine, but is not labeled for use in poultry, so legally a vet cannot prescribe it.
