@BantyChooks

Last time I set these GODZILLA Eggs the were inferts, and I dont know if she lets the BCM on her so I gotta at least try to set

BCM eggs all inferts last time, fingers crossed yet again! Because I really really love the spotted eggs!

...
Do you ever open any eggs before you set to see if they're fertile?

Ummm, they'd kinda freeze outdoors!
Chicks are tough but ducklings are hardier at an earlier age.
Ducklings won't need heat after 4 or 5 weeks even in cool weather.
By 7-9 weeks they can be outdoors all the time with protection from rain and predation regardless of temperature.

I've raised chicks with broodies and hover brooders down to 20F.

The duck cries pitifully as Sally carries it to its doom. It doesn't know why it is unloved. Unwanted. Good for nothing but a meal sometime down the line. It knows someone can save it. But who?! And what of its siblings? Aren't they good ducks? Doesn't anyone want them?!
BANTI, HELP! HELP US, BANTI!

That's cold blooded. I'm sure that's what my rooster was thinking a couple days ago.

Just out of curiosity, what is everyone using for predator control? Is this happening at day or at night? I want to be prepared...
During the day it is just roosters providing the control.
At night, it is locked in tight buildings with nothing larger than a 1/2 inch opening.

This wouldn't be any good during the day, but I invested in one of those foxlights predator control lights. looks like to cops in your backyard but I haven't had a raccoon or other attack since I put it out. I move it every couple weeks. I loved it so much I bought one for my serama breeder because she lost most of her flock to coons when she was out of town-busted right through the coop! She was getting one a day in live traps plus possums-she hasn't has an attack or caught one since she put the light out! I thought it was a gimmick but I was willing to try anything and it has been lifesaving for the birds and for my sanity! It also helps deter prowlers or tresspassers when they think the cops are already there

I have a couple predator eyes that help but aren't fool proof. I move mine almost daily. Eventually raccoons will ignore them.

She is a tough little bird.... She was getting up on her good leg today without using her wings I think she will be okay.... Probably with a limp.... But i have one too sometimes.... so she will fit in just right.
Heck yeah....my ducks handle U.P. Winter like it is nothing .... 26 below one morning and it didn't even phase them.
Asthma?..... I know that feeling all too well.
This weekend my fingers are turning blue.... My doctor wasnt very happy I didn't go to the ER
Sorry.... Me too.... But I've had a couple of COMA nights too..... Hope you get better Sally.....
Blue fingers = bad
Take care of yourself.

Ducklings?

It is when they are little that I am worried about.... If they get wet and I don't see them, or if they "forget" how to get under the heating pad they could die.....
...
They don't forget how to get into warmth. If they did, they wouldn't go under a mother either. That doesn't happen.

AWESOME!!!

I had an extra roo go missing once, I swear he vanished into thin air..... I searched everywhere.... He finally appeared a few hours later.
I had a cochin I thought was a pullet go missing for 3 days. It wasn't till he returned and the other cockerels started beating him up that I realized he was a boy.

Came up on a guy ages ago in a business suit trying to change a tire uncomfortably close to traffic, and it was pretty clear that he was out of his element. I stopped & changed his tire for him, and he wanted to pay me. I told him to keep his money & maybe he'd have a chance to help someone else one day. I could have used the money, but it sure made me feel good.
I was coming up the highway late one night and saw a guy pushing his car up a hill without much luck. He was a soldier in uniform and had a wife and 2 kids in the car. He was a couple miles from any services. Luckily, my bumper matched up closely with his. I pushed him to an exit and into a gas station.
I always try to help those I see that remind me of troubles I had when I was young.

Sorry my parents said same stuff about me.... I could have done good things with my life.... But they always said I was nothing..... Turned out Better then them..... But hurtful words can change history..... Quite literally. Luckily my children excelled...... But i live in a shack on the woods.
I have a very inexpensive watering system that keeps water ice free in THE harsh U.P. AND IT CONTAINS THE MESS.
Nothing wrong with a shack in the woods.

I have cracked myself up with this video I took of my 13 week old LO rooster tonight...

Nice video. Thanks for posting. They truly get most of their lift from their legs and just a little from wings.

I've never even had a beer, much less jack. LOL
Beer isn't just for breakfast any more.

When I was Associate Editor for a monthly bird dog publication, a fellow trialer came running up to me when I first got to the grounds, waving another dog publication at me. Turned out that a Scandinavian publication had seen one of my regular articles & reprinted it. Only thing I could read was my name at the bottom

Nice that they credited you.

I'm convinced..... Where are you north of the "D"?
I WAS JUST DOWN THAT WAY FOR A TIGER GAME.....
I have lots of friends from the D area. They worked at the Flat Rock Foundry and moved here when it closed to work at our assembly plant - which is now gone. Some moved back, about half stayed.
We had transplants from a castings plant in Sheffield AL and assembly plants in Mahwah NJ and LA CA.

HELP!! I just checked my eggs and one that had pipped had yellowish bubbles around the pip zip line and when I looked at the beak it was not moving and dead
1f622.png
What happened?! There have been about 20 that have hatched fine.
It could be any number of things. Aside from incubation issues, nutrition, contamination, storage, handling, transfer and others. Sometimes they just don't thrive. It is common.

have a link ? I asked for my kid to rig a radio to the motion lights so that music would instantly blare when something was in the area, but he said I am dumb and would wake the entire mountain doing something like that!!! ughhhhh ...
I don't think it is a dumb idea. It doesn't have to be that loud. However, most motion lights don't work for small animals.

That's not a thing to do anymore? Always seemed like a smart idea to me.
Me too. You can't have too much stability. Don't they also serve as firebreaks in multi story buildings?

I use a bright flashlight and a dark room. Good luck with your new eggs.
I take the lens out of a small LED flashlight so the small end of the egg fits down into it and use it in a closet that is completely dark.
Most of my eggs are so dark it is hard to see anything anyway.

Morning everyone.

Hen left the Sacramento PO this morning to its final destination. So I'm assuming I'll get a call to pick up this am

Hope she arrives in good shape.

We do know we have rats in the area - We found a HUGE nest, under a dog kennel wood we took apart. They'd even collected things like knives, wire, tin, and made themselves a huge nest under the back of our shed.

...
That's where snakes come in handy. They get into those places where the vermin hide.

i was thinking weasel but have no idea
my dd found her, she was my blue egg layer
Not a weasel. It won't eat that much. I've never see them eat anything. They just kill everything in the building and lap a little blood.
Likely a raccoon or possibly opossum.

Huh. Good to know. That might explain the broken eggs in the coop then.

The kids found an unbroken egg last night, from our chicken that's supposedly been eating them. We check 3-4 times a day for eggs.

I don't know what else to do, besides throwing our great pyr in there with the chickens/goats once they are trained and hope they kill rats.
Try the stairway to heaven rat trap. You'll fall in love with it.

I like the way you think!

the only problem with heated blankets is the new ones have timers to shut them off after like 3 hours
people dont want to burn their houses down or something like that
So you would want to find an older one, if big enough you could line the roof, back wall and floor with it, and find a crate with less holes in it

Thanks, he is so funny to watch. He is super clumsy with his huge feet/legs, my daughter and I got a kick out of our slow-motion video of him.

Just cut the timer out of the cord and splice it back together.
