In my expert opinion...........actually I know little to nothing about chicken genetics and coloring. :D   You could put a legband on the two you think are cockerels and see if you were right when they grow up.

Hehe, It's all very complicated, I know!

That's actually a great idea! I will have to find some proper leg rings though. I think it has to grow with the bird or something.

Typically for chicks I will use a small zip tie. Then just keep an eye on it and replace it before it get's to tight.

I know I think I heard them here!

Quote: congrats!!

woot, my 24+ silkie eggs are shipped. Should be here in a couple of days. hoping to put them in the incubator on friday. That should give them enough chance to settle air cells and I think I may leave them in the cartons to see if it improves hatch rates.

No its not? I give up asking her to use one.

Finally got all the eggs hatched! Staggered batches are crazy! 12 total we hatched on our own. Little Leo, Fluffy Butt, Shelly, Scooby, Shaggy, Speedy, Scooter, Butter Ball, and Pecker. Still have 3 to name.
Congrats!!!! love the names too!

Hey y'all! I haven't been on in forever! Are we still discussing hatching here? I've got a broody on 9 eggs. Was 10 but she pushed one out. It was a quitter.

We're on day 18 so I just candled. We have 8 definite live chicks! Could even see them moving. Yay yay yay! The 9th one looks like a blood ring. Was going to make certain first. Brownie is an odd hen. I'm not sure of her breed. But so far, she's an excellent mama. I'm grateful for that. Hope everyone is doing well.
A special hello to Ms. Sally Sunshine!

You were partially right about free ranging everyone together. I only saw one minor fracas, & that was between 2 teenage cockerels who frequently squabble with one another. Other than that, everyone was fine. The two groups pretty much stayed apart.

However, bedtime was like a Chinese fire drill. Tucker spent the night in the other coop, as did most of the others. It was pretty much dark when I put them up (we worked on the building 'til we couldn't see anymore), so I really couldn't see who was where. When I turned them out just now, there were only 3 in the coop where Tucker & his 3 girlfriends always sleep, and nobody on the roost pole where 4 usually spend the night; all the others crowded into the other coop. I really didn't care, as long as everyone was safely tucked away, although I was concerned about birds been locked up for 7-8 hours in close quarters with ones they weren't used to bunking with. There was a bit of a ruckus in the overcrowded coop 'til they got things sorted out, but there were no casualties and no blood this morning, so it all worked out alright. At least Tucker had a chance to sleep with the future members of his harem; a bit like robbing the cradle. He's probably a happy camper right about now

Oh that's a smart idea, haha. I'm a telecommunications support engineer, so I have heaps of those laying around! I'll do it tomorrow.

Been a long day for me in Melbourne, was galavanting with my girlfriend around the city. Tomorrow I'm going to need to tend to all my feathered friends though. I have zebra finches that should be hatching soon, and I know they need more water in their dispenser. And my jap and button quail need attention, as well as the hen house, and I may need to seperate a pair of budgies because there's a stupid male that won't open his eyes to the available female and keeps trying to whoo the one that is already taken!

Glad to hear that it worked out for them. I guess Tucker felt he needed to check out what the neighbors house felt like.

Since chicks grow so fast just remember to keep checking the zip tie so it doesn't get to tight and cut there leg off.

Sounds like you had a busy day with more fun to come tomorrow.
