All I saw in this thread was the word quail. Are we sure we are talking about old world quail as opposed to new world quail (bobwhite and California)?

Yes they are. I don't know as much about California quail but I imagine they are the same in that regard. With bobwhites, both males and females brood eggs. Flocks also gang brood.
