In the Brooder
I have the same s shaped channels in mine and it is the solid grey colour, it is impossible to see the water in the channels once the turner is in place and without removing the whole lid. I had trouble maintaining humidity and sadly lost chicks that although healthy got stuck in their shells glued to the sides, totalled dried out. Despite using wicking pads and sponges and injecting warm water (during lock down I didn't open the lid) with a large syringe and tube through an air vent in the top I still couldn't keep the humidity up. Frustrated I just kept adding water.
After a heart breaking hatch of just 2 chicks from 16 eggs (most dead in shells soon after drying out whilst pipping) I cleaned out the incubator tray filling it with warm water and trigene detergent only to find water spilling all over the laundry floor and my shoes. Turns out there are about 4-5 holes in the base! The water could leak out as well as allowing precious humidity to escape during the incubation period. I hadn't noticed as I had a soft towel and foam sheet underneath for insulation.
Super frustrating to find this after the agony of losing those poor chicks despite doing everything by the book. I have since plugged up the holes with silicon like Selleys 'No More Gaps' but I'm back to using my little rudimentary 9 egg incubator, scared to start again with the big one until I can find an automatic humidifier or more reliable way to do it. Any suggestions for reliable tried and tested humidifiers or methods that work well for others with the same incubator?
