I usually take eggs out of turner and lay on side for the last 3 days. have never left them in the carton, i thought it make it to hard to get out of egg. but willing to try anything new. any info would be appreciated. one day away from lockdown on first quail hatch. or at least i hope it will be a quail hatch. i will be raising up the humidity to 70-80% and hope for best.

The large hatchiers alway remove and place on the side in hatching tray. must work or sure they would leave them in tray. Myself I put them in hatching tray on their side, but if I miss any they still hatch. So I say either way will work. The hatching tray do have covers to keep the chicks in place.

THE "CARTON DEAL" KEEPS THE EGGS UPRIGHT AND PREVENTS CHICK "DROWNINGS" DURING HATCHING--- AS THERE IS A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF AMNIOTIC FLUID IN THE EGG WITH THE UNHATCHED CHICK WHEN THEY PIP THRU THE EGG THEY ARE RUPTURING THE INNER MEMBRANE WHICH IN FACT ACTS AS A LUNG FOR THE EMBRYO...... ONCE THAT MEMBRANE IS RUPTURED THE LUNG NO LONGER WORKS AND THE CHICK MUST BREATHE AIR IN ORDER TO GET THE OXYGEN IT NEEDS TO LIVE--- IF THE CHICK IS IN A BAD POSSITION IN THE EGG WHEN IT PIPS THE BABY WILL DROWN IN ITS OWN AMNIOTIC FLUID--- NOW THINK OF POORING MILK INTO A CEREAL BOWL--- DOES THE MILK STAY UP ON THE SIDES OR RIM OF THE BOWL? NO IT GOES TO THE LOWEST POINT OF THE CONTAINER RIGHT? BY KEEPING THE UNHATCHED EGGS IN AN UPRIGHT POSSITION ( LG END UP, JUST AS YOU WOULD PLACE THEM IN AN EGG TURNER CUP...) THIS ALLOWS THE FLUIDS TO DRAIN TO THE BOTTOM OF THE EGG---- AWAY FROM THE BABY CHICKS HEAD/ FACE--- THEREBY STOPPING THE "DROWNING"

DO A SEARCH OF THE SUBJECT ON HERE (BYC) AND YOU'LL SEE IT COVERED IN OTHER STRINGS AS WELL--- ALL MY EGGS --- I DO MEAN ALL, PHEASANT/ PARTRIDGE/ QUAIL/ CHICKEN/ TURKEY/ PLATYPUS/ ETC... ARE PLACED IN CARTONS TO KEEP THEM UPRIGHT AT HATCHING TIME--- ONCE I STARTED THIS PRACTICE THERE WAS A NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCE IN SUCESSFUL HATCH RATE--- AT LEAST 20-30% INCREASE!

wow!! Talk about a tough decision, both ways have there merit.Since this is a new way of hatching for me(high humidity) i will try something new and leave them in the carton and see if it helps. I lockdown for 6 days (4 days before hatch and 2 extra just incase there are any slackers) but the late hatchers usually don't do too good so i understand those who hatch by the book!!!! It kills me to cull chicks!! I feel real guilty.

well you hatch your way, but been hatching for years, the carton or keeping egg up right at hatching time, make no differents. Bet the hen would have a hard time doing that. Only way it would may a different is if moving then to lower area of a still air incubator.

Yes the large hatchiers get the best hatch rates.....just because they dont keep late or weak chick dont mean they dont know what they are doing. Most of those would die in shipping.

I have open large ends of eggs after pipping, and no way are those going to drown, unless someone raised the humitiy sky high.

It may make a different in small still air incubators then only because the eggs are lower so farther away from the heating unit,and colder.

Another thing you can turn the eggs to the day they hatch, only thing Chicks get caught in the turner. dont need turned last few days, but turning them will not hurt, been there when i forgot the tray was to hatch that week. bobwhite eggs they were.

Few more facts. eggs on their size the whole time will hatch just as good .if you turn them, reason they are place in incubator large end up if for auto turners. The roll-x and turn-x eggs are on their side all the way thru. eggs are rolled. Get better hatch rate with these incubators.(just like mother hen)

The shape of the egg keep the small end down, which is large end up. Mother nature must know best.

Another thing on running test hatch, with these smaller incubators. do every thing the same with two batchs, dont be surpised it one is better than another......... DONE

UPDATE: Day 16 and im in lockdown. Temp at 99.Humidity steady at 72%. Eggs are in the carton so thay can sit big end up Found my first pip (or at least i think it is a pip) this afternoon. Will keep youall informed on how it goes. If it goes good i already have over 50 quail eggs ready to go in. But let's not get ahead of ourselves.
