Incubator Location

Hi guys!

I am planning my first hatch and have been finding SO much great information on this board. Thank you so much. I am planning on building my own incubator using a cooler, Ranco thermostat and computer fan. I have not yet decided if I should buy heating coil from an incubator supply store, or simply install two light bulbs like I have seen in many DIY incubators. I am either going to use a automatic egg turner, or create a manual one that can be manipulated from the outside of the cooler, so I don't have to take the lid off constantly.

Regardless, my real question is on the location of my incubator. To avoid temp fluctuations and drafts, I am considering using my linen closet. My cooler fits perfectly, with about 6 inches of space on either side. I have read, however, how important ventilation is for hatching chicks. Would the closet be too closed off and prevent oxygen flow? Should I keep the incubator in a corner of my office instead? I live in North Florida so the weather is milder than most places, however, in March a freeze is not unheard of. The closet would probably maintain better. Also, I like the idea of having the incubator closed off and out of danger of being knocked over, etc. It would be a great space saver too.

Any advice or opinions/criticisms are welcome. Thanks for the help!

I kept mine in the closet on top of a dresser. For 2 reasons. To keep the kiddos away and to help keep the temp steady. I must state that my closet is a walk-in closet and not completely closed up. I would not keep it in a closed-off small space. Is yours a walk-in?

No, not a walk in. It's a hall linen closet. There would be about 6-10" of free space on each side of the incubator, and I've taken out the shelves, so there is free space above the incubator (which would sit on the floor). I wonder if I take the door off the hinges and leave it open, if that would be better. Then it would be more of a "nook" than a closet. It would allow fresh air, but also keep things out of the way.

I would just leave the door open, but taken it off might be best. Sounds like a great spot.

I ended up buying an incukit instead of wiring my own thermostat (easier and less expensive!). I set up my cooler and have it running in the closet space. I have been opening and closing the door so often (to turn eggs) I don't think air flow should be a problem after all. I may keep the doorway open closer to hatching though. I created another thread to write my experiences with the incukit. Hopefully it will be helpful for others like me who are new to hatching and not sure what to start with.
